The Kansas City Chiefs took on the Washington Commanders at Arrrowhead Stadium on Monday, October 27, for a heated Monday Night Football game. Taylor Swift is a regular at Chiefs home games, of course, and she attends them to cheer on her soon-to-be-husband, award-winning tight end Travis Kelce of the Chiefs.
While the Chiefs take the spotlight on game days and nights, Swift received some historic news the same day that the Chiefs and Commanders went up against each other. So, not only was she happy to be cheering on her man on Monday, but Swift was also celebrating some great news of her own.
Swift released her new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” on October 3, and she’s been promoting the release heavily ever since. The album was a hit out of the gate and marked biggest debut for an album on the Billboard 200 chart, notching more than 4 million album units. It also shattered the record for the most vinyl albums sold in a single week, with 1.2 million copies, according to Billboard.
Taylor Swift Gets $135 Million News Amid Kansas City Chiefs Game
On the same day of the game, Billboard reported the official earnings for the first week of “The Life of a Showgirl.” Now, these numbers are different from just the number of album units sold.
As Billboard’s Ed Christman reports, “Based on sales and streams, the superstar is estimated to have raked in $135 million in one week from her new album. And even that number is surely too low.”
That $135 million revenue figure is thanks to the album’s huge first-week haul, debuting with 4.002 million equivalent album units, according to Luminate, making it the “only album to pass 4 million in the modern era, and accounted for 50.01% of all current albums in the U.S. that week — but also to an overdrive marketing campaign launched by the Swift camp and her record label, Republic,” adds Christman.
What’s interesting is that according to Billboard, the largest revenue driver was sales through “non-traditional channels,” which they count as “online CD stores such as Amazon and the official Taylor Swift webstore, as well as Christian stores and chains like Urban Outfitters,” which accounted for 70% of all the release’s consumption units.
Rave Reviews for New Taylor Swift Album
“The Life of the Showgirl” has been notching rave reviews. “Taylor Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ combines new, exciting sonic turns with incisive storytelling,” Rolling Stone says in its review of the album. Maya Georgi of Rolling Stone also says, “On her 12th studio album, Swift hits all her marks — from new, exciting sonic turns to incisive storytelling.”
Pitchfork states in their October 3 review of the set that while much of the album “sounds like much of the pop music you have heard over the past 10 years and throughout your lifetime; it asks that this time, you listen more closely, because this is Taylor Swift, with the enormity of commercial power and cultural significance and algorithmic rank that implies.”
So, Swift has plenty of reason to smile at Arrowhead Stadium. Part of it is because of Kelce, and the other part is because of her music.
