When Toronto Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesavage took the mound for Game 1 of the 2025 World Series, he was not the youngest pitcher ever to start a game in the Fall Classic. But he was close.
At 22 years and 88 days old, the Boyertown, Pennsylvania, native trailed five other pitchers who were all 20 years old when they started their games, most recently Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants in 2010.
Nonetheless, the start was still something to be extremely proud of for Yesavage, the Blue Jays first round draft pick in 2024, 20th overall, who did not pitch in the minor leagues last year but saw a meteoric ascent this year, starting the season at Single-A, and jumping all the way up to Rogers Centre.
He made his MLB debut on September 15.
Game 1 of the World Series was only Yesavage’s seventh big league start and only his 27th as professional. His journey leads him to another massive moment on Wednesday when he starts Game 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Through his entire, dizzying baseball experience, Yesavage’s girlfriend, Taylor Frick has been with him. Here’s what you need to know about her.
She Met Yesavage at East Carolina University
While the details of Yesavage and Frick’s relationship are still emerging into the public eye, as the young pitcher gains sudden fame with his rapid rise to World Series stardom, one thing that is known is that they both attended East Carolina University, and that is where they met.
While Yesavage was making a rapid name for himself as East Carolina’s ace starting pitcher, compiling a 19-2 won-loss record and 2.58 ERA with an eye-opening 295 strikeouts in 195 1/3 innings in his three seasons with the Pirates, Frick was earning her Bachelor’s Degree.
They reportedly met on the Greenville, North Carolina, campus where they were introduced through mutual friends — igniting an immediate romantic spark.
She Aspires to Work in Sports Nutrition
Frick graduated from East Carolina in May of this year with a degree in Nutrition Sciences. She also served an internship as a nutrition assistant at the school. According to her Linkedin page, Frick’s professional aspirations are to work in the nutrition field, and based on her internship, she prefers to apply her knowledge “to supply a wide range of athletes with their appropriate food and beverages to meet their energy needs, reach desired weight goals, and prepare them for high-intensity exercise.”
She is Now a Huge Blue Jays Fan
Before her beau’s history-making World Series Game 1 start, Frick drew attention for her brief but enthusiastic Instagram post that read simply, “LFGGG!!!”
Shortly after Yesavage was drafted last year, Frick posted a heartwarming message to he boyfriend.
“Suddenly I’m the biggest blue jays fan ever!!” she wrote. “Getting to watch you do what you love has been such a blessing but the biggest blessing has been getting to know your heart. you are patient, kind, and give 180% of yourself in every aspect of your life. there is no one more deserving of the good and happiness there is in this world. I love you to Canada and back l, I couldn’t be more proud of you.”
Their Anniversary Coincided With His Postseason Debut
The couple’s meeting in 2023 apparently came in October because Frick posted on Instagram to commemorate their two-year anniversary right around the time Yesavage was making his MLB postseason debut against the New York Yankees on October 5.
Yesavage threw 5 1/3 innings in that game, striking out 11 and holding the Yankees scoreless.
Meanwhile, Frick posted, “2 years of loving you. Thank you for showing me your heart today & everyday. I love our love story.”
She Has, Sadly, Been Targeted Online
Without giving any specifics, Yesavage spoke to the media during the Blue Jays playoff run to defend his girlfriend — and others close to him — from what he said were online attacks.
“Living in a world where there’s so many different opinions and feelings which result in a lot of hate, it’s sad to see that people close to me are being attacked for my performance on the field,” the young pitcher said at the time.
“These people have done nothing to warrant this negativity from my actions. Whether that’s my parents, my brothers, my girlfriend, my family, it’s just really sad. I know I have the platform to address it, so I am,” he continued. “I hope that people can realize those people have nothing to do with what happens on the field. And if you have a problem, I’m a man. I can take whatever opinions anybody has about me and my life.”
