49ers’ Kyle Shanahan Sends Strong Message on Jauan Jennings Trade Rumors

Jauan Jennings has had a tumultuous 2025 season with injuries and trade rumors affecting his production for the San Francisco 49ers.

But Kyle Shanahan does not expect the Jennings-related controversy to result in a trade.

The 49ers coach addressed the reported trade rumors and said he would be surprised if Jennings was dealt before the NFL Trade Deadline on Nov. 4.

A season after posting career highs for receptions (77), receiving yards (975) and touchdowns (6) in Brandon Aiyuk’s absence, Jennings has regressed in a big way.

While battling injuries, and an unsuccessful trade request during training camp, Jennings has just 18 receptions for 218 yards and has just one TD while playing six of San Francisco’s eight games.

Kyle Shanahan Would ‘Be Very Surprised If Jauan’ Jennings Was Traded

Shanahan is one of the most honest coaches with the media, and when asked point blank if Jennings could be dealt, the longtime 49ers coach didn’t hesitate with a response.

“I’d be very surprised if Jauan wasn’t on our team throughout this year,” Shanahan said.

Part of that is Shanahan trying to build up his struggling player. But the other factor is Jennings has been one of the truly consistent 49ers offensive players, even though his numbers don’t necessarily show it.

Though he has missed two games, Jennings has suited up more than fellow wideout Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall and tight end George Kittle. Plus, the Niners haven’t even had continuity at quarterback, since Brock Purdy has battled injuries to his shoulder and toe, and backup Mac Jones is even injured.

Jauan Jennings Doesn’t Want To Be Traded By The 49ers

Jennings is negotiating a contract with the 49ers, since he has a void year in 2026 and has been trying to cash in on his career year in 2024. The Niners and Jennings are reportedly no closer to an extension, which is why trade rumors have swirled around him — particularly given the seller’s market for wideouts.

But even though he asked for a trade during the off-season, Jennings spoke about why he wants to remain in San Francisco, especially with it in first place and surrounded by uber-talented offensive players.

“I just love playing with this team,” Jennings said. “To go out there every day and to see guys like Kittle, [fullback Kyle Juszczyk], and [running back Christian McCaffrey], it fires me up because we’ve got a lot of guys who want to contribute and can contribute.”

At some point, the Niners offense is going to get healthy, since they already got Kittle back from a devastating hamstring injury in Week 1. Aiyuk’s return window from the PUP list should open in the next two weeks, Purdy could return for this week’s game against the New York Giants, though Jones has actually been more successful — he boasts a 4-2 record and 65.9 completion percentage.

So even though business is business, and Jennings may end up on a different roster in the near future, the Niners’ window to win is wide open, and they’re better with him than without him, even at 100 percent.
