Dolphins Bring Back Rookie Cornerback Amid Injury Issues Before ‘TNF’

The Miami Dolphins are bringing back a familiar face as cornerback Ethan Robinson was signed to the practice squad Tuesday. An undrafted free agent out of Minnesota, Robinson originally spent the offseason program and training camp with the team before being released in August.

Robinson’s return was part of a busy day of moves for the Dolphins, who also placed cornerback Storm Duck on season-ending injured reserve and placed cornerback Kendall Sheffield on the practice squad/injured list.

The Dolphins (2-6) host the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday (8:15 p.m. ET).

Rookie Cornerback Stood Out in Preseason

Robinson, 22, was waived by the Dolphins as part of final cuts and has yet to appear in an NFL game. But his familiarity with Anthony Weaver’s system should allow him to provide depth to a secondary in need.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Robinson went undrafted after one season at Minnesota, where he had three interceptions in 13 games. Prior to that, Robinson played three years at Bucknell and was All-Patriot League.

Robinson impressed in the preseason, making a game-sealing interception in a 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Afterward, he told Miami’s WTVJ-Channel 4 he just “tried to make a play. Got my blitz time right, saw the angle of the quarterback’s arm.”

Dolphins’ Secondary Nursing Injuries

The Dolphins’ secondary needs reinforcements after Duck sustained a serious knee injury in Miami’s Week 8 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Monday that Duck, who had missed the previous six games because of an ankle injury, will miss the rest of the season. The second-year cornerback had two tackles and a pass breakup after registering 35 tackles (24 solo) in 14 games as a rookie.

Miami is also dealing with injuries to safeties Ashtyn Davis (quad) and Ifeatu Melifonwu (hand).

Jack Jones, JuJu Brents, and Rasul Douglas are the remaining top cornerbacks for the Dolphins, who rank 23rd in the NFL in both passing defense and total defense.
