A week of notable forfeits in Bay Area high school football has added another chapter.
Antioch High’s Thursday night football game against Liberty has been called off, according to a post on Liberty football’s Instagram page. The post, which cited a statement from Liberty principal Efa Huckaby, attributed the forfeit to “violations of (Antioch’s) district code of conduct.”
“We support Antioch High School’s decision and appreciate their commitment to upholding standards of conduct and accountability,” Huckaby wrote in the statement to the Liberty High community.
The matchup was set to be a pivotal one in the Bay Valley Athletic League. Antioch entered the week 7-1 and 3-0 in league play, marking its best start since 2015. Liberty entered the week 6-2, 2-1, prepared to provide Antioch perhaps its stiffest test so far.
Instead, the game will not be played. Liberty improves to 7-2, 3-1; Antioch is now also 7-2, 3-1.
The junior varsity game, scheduled for 4:30 p.m., will proceed as planned.
