Mets Trade Proposal Lands Ace from Lousy AL Team for 3 Players

The focus for the New York Mets this offseason will be centered around what the organization wants to do on the mound. With prospects to trade, money to spend, and other avenues to get better, there’s not much of a reason why the Mets won’t go out and add an ace-caliber arm. The only question remaining is who the Mets will go out and try to add.

When proposing potential ideas for the Mets to pursue, SNY had an intriguing one for right-hander Pablo Lopez of the Minnesota Twins. Lopez has been one of the more underrated starters in Major League Baseball over the past few years and would be a big boost to this Mets rotation.

The trade proposal would move on from Mark Vientos, A.J. Ewing, and Jonathan Pintaro. On top of Vientos, the Mets would give up two top-25 ranked prospects.

“Not every trade is going to be a blockbuster, but a healthy López would fit squarely in the two or three spot in New York’s rotation. He will turn 30 just before the 2026 season and has two years and $43 million remaining on his contract…

“Due diligence will be needed on López’s medicals, as he missed three months with a strain in the back of his shoulder and ended the season with a mild forearm strain. All signs point to a normal offseason and spring training. Prior to 2025, López had three consecutive seasons of 32 starts and 180+ innings pitched where he posted a combined 3.83 ERA. If the medicals check out, you can pair López with another addition to the rotation this offseason and that could make a difference in upgrading and stabilizing that unit,” SNY wrote.

Can the Mets Benefit From the Twins’ Offseason Decisions?

It seemed likely that the Minnesota Twins would move multiple players this winter, just considering where the organization stands.

For teams like the New York Mets and others around Major League Baseball that want to get better starting pitching, guys like Lopez and Joe Ryan would be ideal targets from the Twins. However, when speaking to reporters about what he plans to do with Lopez and Ryan, Derek Falvey, the Twins’ president of operations, said that he wants his right-handers with him moving forward.

“When I look at this roster and I look at the team,” Falvey said, per MLB.com. “I’ve said it now probably a number of times about the core and the group: Those guys [López and Ryan] are part of it, right? So that’s my vision, that’s my hope. That’s my expectation as we sit here. It still requires some ongoing conversations with ownership and what that looks like. And ultimately, my hope is that we could build around that group. That would be my hope.”

Will the Mets Need to Look for Alternate Options?

A whole offseason has to play out, so that isn’t set in stone for the New York Mets. However, it’s somewhat of a sign that they aren’t heading into the offseason with the idea of moving on from both.

Again, that can change, but it’s a bit different than what many expected.
