Former Rams RB Todd Gurley Opens Up About Playing With Aaron Donald

Despite retiring five years ago, running back Todd Gurley has still been one of the most productive offensive players for the Los Angeles Rams in recent memory.

In five seasons for LA, Gurley ran for 5,404 yards and 58 rushing touchdowns. In the pass game, he had 243 receptions for 2,090 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The running back was the 2015 Offensive Rookie of the Year, the 2017 Offensive Player of the Year, a three-time Pro Bowler, a second-team All-Pro and a two-time second-team All-Pro.

He led the league in rushing touchdowns in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, with 13 and 17, respectively.

Gurley has quite a resume for the amount of time he played with the Rams. In his five-year tenure with the Rams, the running back has played with one of the best defensive players in recent history and of all time.

The former RB made an appearance on Rams Iconic Live Show and spoke about playing with Rams legend Aaron Donald.

If there is someone to one-up Todd Gurley’s resume, it will be his former defensive teammate, Aaron Donald.

The former defensive lineman was a Pro Bowler in all 10 seasons of his career, an eight-time first-team All-Pro, the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year, won the Defensive Player of the Year award three times (2017, 2018, 2020 seasons) and was named to the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team.

When asked by host D’Marco Farr about how it was playing with Donald, Gurley called his former teammate a “maniac.”

“This was like my rookie season, on the offense, they were like ’99 (Donald) and 94 (Robert Quinn), they’re going to make every third down play, don’t worry about it,’” Gurley said on the show. “Pretty much the whole season, it was like that. I was like, ‘dang, this is crazy.’”

“But, really, [it was] when I used to see him do his offseason workouts, I’m like, ‘Who is this maniac who you’re training with?’ But everything that he worked for, he deserved, rightfully so. It’s just different levels to work ethic and some people’s work ethics make others look just like they’re not doing nothing at all… A lot of people get blessed and God makes ‘them ones’ every now and then. Thankfully, I was able to play alongside [one].”

Todd Gurley isn’t the only person to have the same thought about Aaron Donald’s offseason workouts.

LA Rams defender Jared Verse had the smart idea to train with Donald before the start of the 2025 NFL season and called it a “workout from hell.”

“I’m telling you, he’s a psychopath,” Verse said, via the NFL website. “I need like another offseason to get on that. It was so bad.”

“I’ve worked out at multiple programs. I’ve worked out with hundreds of people, [the] best athletes in the NFL, best athletes in college. That was the hardest workout I’ve ever done… Not even close. Like, you know them hell days in college? Couldn’t hold a candle to that.”

Gurley credited Donald’s work ethic for helping him become an NFL great. If a bit of the former three-time DPOY rubs off on Verse, the Rams could get another elite defender in the league.
