Did Tom Cruise subject Ana de Armas to Nicole Kidman ‘instant lust?’

So Ana de Armas reportedly ended her romance with Tom Cruise because she “started to get a little uncomfortable with how fast it was going.”

That’s according to Us weekly, citing an insider who said that de Armas, 37, decided to “put the brakes on” on the relationship after she was first linked to the 63-year-old “Mission: Impossible” star in February. “Tom and Ana are done for now,” the insider told Us Weekly.

Given what’s been public about Cruise’s personal intensity and “need for speed” as an action star, de Armas probably should not be that surprised that the “Top Gun” actor would want to move “fast” into a commitment, as Us Weekly reported.

After all, Cruise proposed to his third wife Katie Holmes in May 2005, after just eight weeks of dating and a few weeks after he infamously jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s couch to declare his love for the 16-years-younger “Dawson’s Creek” star.

Consider also the “instant lust” that Cruise said sparked his love affair with Nicole Kidman, then 22, on the set of their 1990 race-car movie, “Days of Thunder.” Vanity Fair reported that Cruise, then 28, was still “entangled” in his first marriage to Mimi Rogers but that he and Kidman couldn’t help themselves.

“Instant lust, that’s what I felt,” Cruise told Vanity Fair in a 1995 profile of Kidman. “I thought she was amazingly sexy and stunning. It grew into love and respect.”

Cruise then described the immediate certainty he felt that he and the tall Australian beauty had to be together. “I knew she was it for me,” he told Vanity Fair.

“I absolutely knew—I just knew it,” Cruise said. “I thought, This is the person to be able to share all of who I am with, and her with me. There was a freshness to life, and a mutual soul I was looking for. I just knew I couldn’t live without her. It’s the best decision I ever made.”

Of course, it didn’t turn out to be a decision Cruise would feel good about in the long run. Almost as suddenly as Cruise was struck by “instant lust” for Kidman when he met her, he told her in 2001 that he wanted out of their 10-year marriage.

As Kidman said in her court response to Cruise’s divorce filing, he left her without warning and he refused to discuss the problems in their marriage or go to counseling, the Daily Mail reported at the time. Within 24 hours, Cruise’s publicists told the world about their split, claiming it was “amicable”; Cruise would cryptically say later, “Nicole knows why.”

A sordid backstory later emerged about Cruise’s alleged reasons for divorcing Kidman — and it could point to other factors in de Armas’ reported decision to break up with Cruise.

The “Mission: Impossible” star’s cryptic “Nicole knows why” comment may have been intended to make people suspect Kidman had been unfaithful, the Daily Mail reported in 2019. But Cruise also may have been trying to obscure the alleged role that the controversial Church of Scientology had in ending their marriage.

According to Alex Gibney’s 2015 HBO documentary “Going Clear,” the church pressured Cruise to break up with Kidman because she had resisted joining the organization. The church also sought to turn Cruise and Kidman’s adopted children, Isabella and Connor, against Kidman.

Given Scientology’s reported role in all three of Cruise’s marriages to Rogers, Kidman and Holmes — and their subsequent divorces — it’s possible that de Armas also became wary of an “entanglement” with him. In May, the Daily Mail speculated that Scientology could be a potential roadblock to a long-lasting romance between Cruise and de Armas.

Over the past 20 years, news reports have portrayed Cruise as one of the most powerful people in the cult-like organization, and all three of his ex-wives practiced Scientology when they were married to him. Rogers reportedly introduced Cruise to Scientology, but quietly left the organization sometime after their marriage ended in 1989.

Both Kidman and Holmes reportedly dedicated themselves to studying the teachings of founder L. Ron Hubbard, but Scientology insiders also revealed that both women eventually backed away from committing themselves to the church. Multiple reports also say that Holmes filed for divorce in 2012 because she was concerned about the church having an outsized influence over how they raised their daughter, Suri. Holmes got full custody, and Cruise is reportedly estranged from his daughter, now 19, because she did not become a Scientologist.

Meanwhile, de Armas supposedly wants to at least stay friends with Cruise. After all, they are co-starring together in Doug Liman’s thriller “Deeper” and had begun rehearsals in the U.K. the Daily Mail reported. The Us Weekly source suggested that  hope is not lost for the two finding their way back into a relationship. De Armas “still likes him a lot, and they have a connection,” the source said.

“They want to remain friends, but she needed to take a step back,” the insider said, adding that they’ll “see how things go in the future.”
