Commanders Trade Idea Lands Veteran QB From Rivals

The Washington Commanders could make a fairly significant move ahead of the trade deadline. Washington, a surprise playoff team from a year ago, has stumbled throughout the 2025 campaign. In fact, after a respectable 3-2 start, the Commanders have now lost four consecutive games.

Along with a disappointing stretch of defeats, Washington is now also without their star quarterback. Jayden Daniels suffered a gruesome elbow injury during a blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks on November 2. Not only will the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year winner miss substantial time, but head coach Dan Quinn is receiving heat for leaving Daniels in the fourth quarter of the lopsided game.

Backup Marcus Mariota eventually entered the game for Daniels and will be the starter moving forward. This is, of course, if the Commanders do not make a trade to add a quarterback before the November 4 deadline. One player that is available to acquire is New York Giants veteran Russell Wilson. The former 10-time Pro Bowler is currently serving as backup to rookie Jaxson Dart after being benched in week four.

Acquiring Russell Wilson would give Washington Commanders Options

GettyRussell Wilson has struggled during his stint with the New York Giants.

One of the biggest questions regarding trading for Wilson is whether or not Washington feels he can improve the team. Wilson undoubtedly has had the better career than Mariota and has historically been his team’s starter throughout his time in the NFL. Mariota, on the other hand, has typically been utilized as a backup. The former Oregon Duck has started over four games just once since the 2019 season.

So far this season, neither quarterback has had overly impressive stats. Wilson has 786 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, and a completion percentage of 58.9%. Mariota has fewer yards with 639, but one more touchdown. He also has a higher successful completion rate of 63.6%.

The difference between Wilson and Mariota might not exactly be overwhelming. Actually, they may even put up similar stats on the field with Washington’s playmakers. Adding Wilson, however, would give the Commanders another veteran option at the position. They could also not have to give the Giants much in return for the insurance policy.

Commanders Need to Decide if They are Buyers or Sellers

Rivals making a trade together is typically a tricky situation. After all, nobody wants to make their divisional opponents better. Nevertheless, the Giants are 2-7 and likely not making the playoffs this year. On top of this, New York could shed Wilson’s salary, while also removing a noticeable distraction from the team.

The Commanders ultimately need to determine if they are buyers or sellers ahead of the trade deadline. At 3-6 with their star quarterback down, a case could be made that Washington could look to offload some players for draft picks. NBC’s Mike Florio has claimed that veterans such as Von Miller, Deebo Samuel, and Bobby Wagner could become available as trade pieces.

However, if Quinn and company still believe that the team can make the playoffs, they will likely make a move for a quarterback. If it is Wilson, the Giants would likely take a seventh-round pick for the former star.

Washington Commanders receive: Russell Wilson

New York Giants receive: 7th-round pick
