A California fruit grower has voluntarily recalled peaches because of possible listeria contamination.
The recall covers Moonlight Companies’ yellow peaches and white peaches sold individually or in packages at stores nationwide between Sept. 16 and Oct. 29. Exempt from the recall are peaches whose stickers or packaging says “Washington” or “Organic.”
As of last week, no illnesses had been linked to the Moonlight peaches. The company said the recall was prompted by the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in a packing facility.
Listeria infection can cause symptoms including high fever, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can be fatal to more susceptible people, including children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms usually begin within several days of consumption.
The warning comes amid a listeria outbreak tied to pasta from a Sacramento-area food company. At least six people have died and 27 have been sickened in the outbreak that began in August.
The recalled peaches were sold at stores including Trader Joe’s, Target, Costco, Whole Foods, Walmart and Kroger. A full list of label codes can be found in the recall notice.
Those who bought the peaches are advised to discard them and to sanitize any surfaces the fruit touched. Questions, including those about refunds, can be directed to Reedley-based Moonlight Companies, at (855) 215-5017.
