Falcons Sign And Cut Kicker After Fatal Flaw Costs Game

The Atlanta Falcons wasted no time trying to atone for Sunday’s fatal error from kicker Parker Romo as the kicking carousel continues to spin round and round for the promising Flacons.

ESPN’s Mike Garafolo broke the news on X at 11 this morning.

“The #Falcons are signing veteran K Zane Gonzalez following a workout this morning, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Garafolo posted. “The team is waiving Parker Romo, who was 11-for-14 on FGs with Atlanta and missed a late extra point in the 1-point loss to the #Patriots on Sunday.”

This is now the third kicker who will be attempting to split the uprights for the Dirty Birds this season. They turned to Romo after fan favorite Younghoe Koo was cut earlier this season.

“The Falcons originally signed Romo to their practice squad on Sept. 9 after season-to-season performance struggles from longtime kicker Younghoe Koo, including a missed game-tying, 44-yard field goal in Atlanta’s Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” team reporter Terrin Waack writes. “Ten days later — and after a Week 2 performance in which Romo went 5-for-5 on field goals to beat the Minnesota Vikings — the Falcons released Koo and signed Romo to the active roster.”

Are The Falcons Being To Quick To Cut These Kickers

No other team is going through kickers quite like the Atlanta Falcons are this season. But have the signings been necessary?

For Koo, it was only one missed field goal that cost him his job. However, his field goal percentage had gone down every single year since his amazing 2020 run. This included a career low 73% in Raheem Morris’ first year as head coach.

Enter Parker Romo. Romo has played in just 11 NFL games. In those games, he is a career 22-26. This includes being 2-3 from 54+ and 19 of 21 on extra point attempts.

So, while accountability is important and you absolutely under no circumstances can miss that extra point on Sunday, it does seem as though this firing was a little premature. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. But in Morris’ defense, 78.6% is not a good enough FG percentage to keep your job in this league.

Raheem Morris Speaks On Cutting Romo

As NFL fans, we don’t know what we don’t know. Obviously there is a reason that the 3-5 Falcons would have such a short leash with a kicker in 2025. This is a team that could be firmly planted in the playoff picture if two kicks had gone their way.

Raheem Morris is clearly fed up with the inconsistent play from the position and had this to say.

“Obviously, we’ve got to look at that, and we’ve started that process already,” Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said Monday. “We’ve worked out a bunch of different people, so we better bring people in and figure out what it’s going to be this week. At the end of the day, you’ve got to make that kick. Like we talked about, those pressure situations aren’t built on practice fields, they’re built in games, and they’re built in that environment.”
