T
he Cincinnati Bengals are going the sellers route at this year’s trade deadline. Even though the team is still very much alive in the AFC playoff race, a 3-6 record through nine games has created reason for pessimism and with quarterback Joe Burrow out with an injury until at least December, the Bengals figured that they might as well start cleaning house and build for the future. One of the players traded by the Bengals at the deadline, linebacker Logan Wilson, was a key player for the franchise during his five and a half seasons and will now look to be a key player for the Dallas Cowboys.
And anytime a big name player is traded, it leaves a major void for the team he left. For the Bengals, Wilson was the heart and soul of the defense and his departure will certainly be felt. After the trade, Bengals players such as captains B.J. Hill and Trey Hendrickson shared their thoughts on their teammate getting traded.
Bengals Players Share Their Thoughts
Multiple Bengals players spoke out on Wilson’s trade, including team captains Hill and Hendrickson. Hendrickson, who is dealing with trade rumors of his own, said that even though he will miss having Wilson around, he knows that Wilson deserves more of an opportunity for playing time– having a reduced role in Cincinnati all throughout this season.
“I have nothing but respect for the way he handled himself as a professional in times of adversity,” Hendrickson said. “Faith, family, football, in that order, I think he established that. He’s a good, God-fearing man. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a football player and what he’s done in his career. And I have even more respect for how he carries himself as a man and now a captain.
“He’s a good friend of mine. Friendships don’t just dissolve in the National Football League. He’ll be a friend for a life,” Hendrickson added. “I wish him nothing but success. There’s nothing but air and opportunity in Dallas for him, and it’s good that he’s going to be back in a linebacker role. That’s where he deserves to be.”
Hill, who started his career with the New York Giants before being traded to the Bengals prior to the 2021 season, shared his own perspective about Wilson’s trade and said that while it is not fun getting traded, it can work out for the best if it’s a good situation.
“You hate seeing guys leave, especially when they’re traded,” Hill said. “Getting traded sucks, especially when you’ve been somewhere for so long and it’s all you know. I hate to see a great guy like that leave. It can work out great in the long run, but man, when you’re around a group of guys for so long and then get traded, it sucks. Those bonds you build with your teammates are real, and they’re strong. And to have to get up and leave just sucks. We played a lot of football together, and Logan’s a guy that was always been there for me.”
Wilson’s Role in Dallas
Offensively, the Cowboys have been on point– with quarterback Dak Prescott arguably playing his best football. But on the defensive side, they have been shorthanded– especially at linebacker. Now that they have Wilson, it gives them a formidable star to pair alongside Kenneth Murray in the hopes that it can turn their season around. But with the Cowboys on a bye week, Wilson gets more time to get acclimated to his new team before making his debut in Week 11 against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football.
Currently sitting at 3-5-1, the Cowboys have not had the best start but are still in the mix when it comes to the playoffs. Now, they hope that trading for Wilson will pay off and give them the boost that they desperately need.
