Dozens of planes have been left circling above the skies in Belgium after reports of suspicious drone activity grounded planes.
Flights have been suspended at Brussels Airport after concerns over drones in the area.
A drone was reportedly spotted near the busy airport shortly before 7pm and again at around 8pm GMT.
Drones were also seen over Kleine-Brogel and Florenne air bases this evening.
Footage showed a suspected drone being chased by a police helicopter near Brussels Airport.
Velina Tchakarova, a passenger on one of the planes, said on X she was stuck on a plane due to the first drone and about to take off, when the second drone sighting halted the departure.
She said: ‘We were literally just about to take off when another drone activity was detected over Brussels airport. No joke!’
Brussels Airport said: ‘There are currently no departing or arriving flights at Brussels Airport due to drone sightings around the airport.
‘We monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as soon as we have more information.
‘You can follow your flight here or via our app.
‘We apologise for the inconvenience.’
Shortly after the incident at Brussels, Liege and Charleroi airports had to suspend flights as well.
Flights were halted at Charleroi as a precaution, while it has not been confirmed whether the drone sighting in Brussels is connected to the Liege airspace closure.
Just as air traffic was returning to normal, a ‘Zero Rate’ incident was declared at Brussels, Charleroi and Liege, according to Flightradar24.
It means the airports will not accept flights at least until 1am UTC, the flight tracking service said.
An estimated 30 planes were in the air when the latest incident was declared.
Flights have been diverted to airports like Ostend, Deurne, Eindhoven and Lille.
Passengers with grounded flights at Brussels are expected to have to spend their night at the airport, Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad reports.
Footage shows camp beds being brought out.
The latest sightings come after a spate of drone activity in Denmark, Sweden and Germany, including near a Swedish naval base.
