Shedeur Sanders is back at practice, but the rookie quarterback is still questionable for the Cleveland Browns’ Week 10 matchup against the New York Jets.
Sanders is dealing with a back issue he suffered prior to the team’s bye week. It knocked him out of the Week 9 matchup with the New England Patriots. The fifth-round passer has been working hard in his rehab but is still not a full-go, per head coach Kevin Stefanski.
“He’ll be limited today,” Stefanski said on Wednesday. “We need to see how he responds. Obviously, he’s pushing very hard in rehab. Need to see how he does over the next couple of days.”
If Sanders is healthy, he’ll be the primary backup to Dillon Gabriel, who is preparing for his fifth start of the season.
Browns Offense Looking for Spark After Change
The Browns are changing things up as they emerge from the bye week. Gabriel will remain the starting quarterback but offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will be calling plays. Stefanski announced earlier this week he’d be handing those duties over the Rees.
“These are things that I’m always looking at — what can we do better? I have a ton of trust and faith in Tommy. He’s more than capable, so excited for him,” Stefanski said. “But bottom line is we have to just get better, collectively. That’s offense, that’s defense, that’s special teams, that’s players, that’s coaches. So, that’s our charge and that’s what we’re working hard to do.”
The Browns hope the change can bring out something new from Gabriel, who has struggled in his first four starts. So far, Gabriel has passed for just 702 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. The major issue is that he’s failed to produce big plays, averaging just 4.9 yards per attempt.
“Hasn’t changed much in terms of day to day,” Gabriel said of the change in play-callers. “I think it’ll be good for the guys who want to get this thing going the right direction.”
Browns Preparing for Both Jets Quarterbacks
The Jets were a big seller at the trade deadline, shipping off Pro Bowlers Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner. The Browns did not make any significant moves, keeping key veterans like David Njoku and Wyatt Teller on the roster.
New York enters with one win and has yet to name its starting quarterback for Sunday’s matchup. The Browns are preparing for both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor.
“Two different players but good in their own right. Justin Fields is extremely dangerous and very, very fast. In the run game, he’s a threat, he can make all the throws and then he can tuck it and run,” Stefanski said. “Tyrod is a veteran who knows what to do with the football. Very accurate, good athlete, can make you miss outside the pocket. A veteran who operates well. Have to be prepared for both.”
The Browns are 2-6 but enter the matchup as a 2.5-point road favorite. It’s just the second time this season that the Browns have been favored in a matchup.
