BBC viewers have been left in floods of tears after binge watching an ‘utterly stunning’ new comedy series.

Leonard And Hungry Paul, which is based on Rónán Hession’s book of the same name, was released on BBC iPlayer earlier this month.

The six-part series, which is narrated by Pretty Woman star Julia Roberts, follows the story of two friends in their 30s – Leonard, a ghostwriter, and Hungry Paul, a part-time postal worker.

Starring Black Mirror’s Alex Lawther as Leonard, Laurie Kynaston as Hungry Paul and Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, the show explores the two main character’s ups and downs as they navigate a world that doesn’t always make space for their gentle nature.

Following its release, fans have taken to social media to praise the show’s ‘quietly beautiful’ story.

@KieranJ_1979 wrote on X: ‘Leonard & Hungry Paul, by the way. What a truly lovely series that was. Really recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.’

@DisforDenis said: ‘Just finished the BBC adaptation of Leonard and Hungry Paul. It got me right in the feels.

‘I’d actually watch a whole series based solely on the Hungry Paul character, loved him to bits & the English actor playing him does a better Irish accent than me!’

@BDevlin1 added: ”I’ve just watched one of the most beautiful series I’ve ever seen. Leonard and Hungry Paul. It’s utterly stunning. I’m shocked by how perfect it is.’

Meanwhile, @martinalmighty argued: ‘Leonard and Hungry Paul is by far one of the most heartwarming tv series I’ve watched in recent years. Just quiet, well-paced, perfect balance of depth and humour.’

@TedFan21 similarly said: ‘Just finished Leonard & Hungry Paul and really enjoyed it, we need a series two!’

Prior to the series being released, Hollywood star Roberts said: ‘Leonard and Hungry Paul is such a magical book.

‘I am delighted to be a tiny part of this novel becoming a television series.’

An official synopsis of the series reads: ‘Quiet lives, big hearts. A gentle, meandering tale of friendship, board games and finding your way in the world.’

The show also stars Helen Behan, Lorcan Cranitch and Charlotte McCurry.

Lawther, who plays Leonard in the series, is best known for starring in Black Mirror’s Shut Up and Dance episode, while Kynaston was most recently in Fool Me Once and The Sandman.

Leonard and Hungry Paul is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
