Rams Add Versatile Playmaker, Big-Bodied Youngster in Roster Shuffle

The Los Angeles Rams are putting action behind head coach Sean McVay’s comments, and it is impacting their roster.

The Rams moved practice squad running back Ronnie Rivers to the 53-man roster.

However, that is not the changes McVay suggested could be coming to the Rams’ roster; changes the team began to make in the wake of the 2025 NFL trade deadline, which passed without another addition for LA.

The Rams are on the road in Week 10, taking on the San Francisco 49ers, who are 6-3 in an NFC West showdown with significant implications.

Ronnie Rivers Sends Message After Signing to Rams’ Roster

The Rams have called on Rivers often, with the former undrafted free agent logging 36 games played and two starts since entering the league in 2022. Rivers began his career with the Arizona Cardinals before making his way to the Seattle Seahawks and, finally, the Rams.

“He never fails [praying hands emoji],” Rivers posted on X on November 5.

Rivers, 26, is the son of former NFL tailback Ron Rivers. The younger Rivers has rushed for 249 yards on 63 carries, adding another 85 yards on 15 receptions out of the backfield.

Rivers has played in two games for the Rams this season, logging 14 snaps on special teams and one on offense, per Pro Football Reference. He has 200 career offensive snaps, but he logged 248 snaps on special teams last season alone, underscoring his role on the team.

The Rams’ backfield is deep.

They have 2023 Pro Bowler Kyren Williams, but also 2023 third-round draft pick Blake Corum, and 2024 fourth-rounder Jarquez Hunter, the latter of whom has also been a special teamer.

That puts Rivers down the depth chart, but the Rams value the multi-faceted back, who is a California native and was college teammates with offseason free agent signing and wide receiver Davante Adams at Fresno State.

Rams Sign K Harrison Mevis to Practice Squad

McVay spoke candidly about the Rams’ kicking game being a problem. However, he refrained from singling out anyone on the roster or coaching staff, including kicker Joshua Karty and special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn.

The Rams signed Pro Bowl long snapper Jake McQuaide to their practice squad. He will take over for Alex Ward.

However, Mevis’ addition was a clear sign that the Rams at least want to have competition for Karty in practice, and McVay told reporters on Wednesday that the two will do just that.

Mevis, 23, was an undrafted free agent out of Missouri in 2024. Nicknamed the “Thiccer Kicker” for his 240-plus-pound frame, he has spent time with the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets over the past two seasons. However, he has yet to see any action in the regular season.

He was 3-for-4 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points for the Jets during the 2025 preseason.

Karty is 10-for-15 on FGAs and has missed three extra points (in 26 tries). His mechanics have been scrutinized amid his slump, with those of his knuckleball kickoffs potentially carrying over.

The Rams selected Karty with the No. 209 overall selection of the 2024 draft. He connected on 29 of his 34 tries, meaning he has already missed as many kicks through eight games in 2025 as he had in all of the 2024 campaign. The Rams now have his replacement on the roster.
