Victoria station closed causing travel chaos due to faulty escalator

London Underground workers have begun a strike that impacts most of the network, with limited or no services running on the Tube and DLR between Sunday and Friday. Commuters this morning have been left fuming after London Victoria station was closed due to a faulty escalator.

Early risers were left stranded on platforms after the station, which was busy, told customers just after 6am that it was closed.

People have been encouraged to look for alternative routes to get to work during the busiest time of the day.

Transport for London (TfL) says that while the London Underground station is closed, there is still good service on the Victoria, Circle and District Lines.

Departure boards show that railway services have been unaffected.

Thameslink and Gatwick Express have warned commuters to expect disruption.

While Southern Rail said on X: ‘Southern trains are running unaffected by this issue but for travel to and onwards travel from London Victoria, you may need to use an alternative route.’

A National Rail spokesperson said engineers are on site repairing the escalator.

They added: ‘You can use your Southern or Gatwick Express ticket to travel on Thameslink trains between Gatwick Airport and London Bridge, at no extra cost.

‘From there, your London Underground ticket will be accepted by London Underground, on any reasonable route to your destination.

‘You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today.

‘Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.’

Elsewhere, there are severe delays on the Piccadilly line between Acton Town and Heathrow Terminal 4 and 5.

The Metropolitan line is closed between Aldgate and Baker Street stations due to a track fault.
