During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert“, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on the 2000 biopic that became one of her most celebrated performances and the friendship that made filming it so special.
âYouâre determined to make me cry,â Roberts told Colbert, 61, with a soft laugh after he mentioned Finneyâs name. âWhen I think about that movie, you know, I do think about Albert.â
GettyFinney, who died in 2019 at age 82, portrayed lawyer Ed Masry opposite Robertsâ Erin Brockovich. The British actor earned an Oscar nomination for his performance, and Roberts said he made every day on set feel effortless and full of warmth, one of the most fulfilling experiences of her career.
âHe Made Everything So Easyâ
Robertsâ face lit up as she reflected on the effortless connection she shared with Finney on set. âYou know, it doesnât take an enormous amount of effort to do acting,â she said.
âBut it was so easy, that movie. Everybody was so easy. There was just a flow. The days were great, and it was just a job that felt very kind to the inside of me.â

Fond Memories from ‘Erin Brokovich’ Set
The actress fondly recalled one of her favorite memories from filming in a small California town, where the cast stayed together at a local Holiday Inn.
âIn the center of this big parking lot where the Holiday Inn was, there was a one-screen movie theater,â Roberts shared. âSteven Soderbergh would bring movies for us to watch because there wasnât much else to do.â
She smiled as she recounted a hilarious moment. âOne weekend he had Animal House, and Albert showed up in his bed sheet [fashioned like a toga] and said, âI thought it was a thing. I thought that we were all gonna do this,ââ Roberts said with a laugh.
GettyâHe looked great⦠and there we were.”
