Exciting news for fans of comedy horror and 1980s nostalgia â a long-awaited second sequel to Joe Dante’s 1984 classic “Gremlins” is on the way! Moreover, not only do we have a date set for the exciting third installment in the iconic franchise, but a major star from the first two movies has teased involvement.
The news was revealed by David Zaslav, the CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery, during a Warner Bros. investor call on Thursday, October 6, with Variety among the first platforms to report it.
Steven Spielberg is returning to executive produce the movie, with “Home Alone” director Chris Columbus on directorial and production duties.
Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein are set to co-write the screenplay, while the rest of the production crew includes Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe.
Nothing about the movie’s plot or its starring cast haven been disclosed. However, rather excitingly, Zach Galligan â Billy Peltzer in the first two movies â has hinted at his involvement in the project.
When Will “Gremlins 3” Be Released?
Per Variety, “Gremlins 3” has been added to Warner Bros.’ release schedule for November 19, 2027. That means it’s over two years away, but that hasn’t stopped fans from expressing their elation at the news on social media.
One X user responded to Variety’s post about the news by saying, “Finally something to look forward to!”
Another user commented, “I am 100% down for this especially with Columbus coming back!!”
Someone else wrote, “Yay! I’ve been re-watching the first two films.”
However, there was some disappointment, as the lack of any mention of “Gremlins” director Joe Dante’s involvement didn’t go unnoticed.
One user wrote, “No Dante? 𧔠While another said, “No Joe Dante? Fail.”
Zach Galligan Chimed in With a Big Hint at His Involvement
Zach Galligan responded to Variety’s post by quoting it and adding the eye emoji, seemingly hinting at his involvement in “Gremlins 3.”
The possibility of Galligan, 61, reprising his role as Billy Peltzer arguably had fans more enthused than they were with the announcement of “Gremlins 3” itself.
One user replied to him by saying, “Really hope you are in the movie, it wouldn’t be a Gremlins movie without you. ð¤ð»”
An enthusiastic “Gremlins” fan with a vivid imagination wrote, “Billy, Kate & their kids all taking on The Gremlins! I’ve only been wanting this for years. ð”
Another X user wrote, “If youâre not back, weâre not watching ð literally just watched the OG a few nights ago.”
Meanwhile, horror magazine Bloody Disgusting responded by commenting, “need Zach back.”
The November release date of “Gremlins 3” gives credence to the idea that the movie will be going back to the Christmas roots of the original.
“Gremlins” earned a staggering $212.9 million worldwide and its legacy includes the creation of the PG-13 rating. Its 1990 sequel, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” earned a disappointing $41.5 million. If the third installment is executed correctly, focuses more on following on from the original, and leans into the nostalgia factor, it could be a huge hit.
We can’t wait to see it.
