The Toronto Blue Jays lost in the World Series and could have some major changes this offseason.
Toronto has several key pending free agents like Bo Bichette, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, and Seranthony Dominguez, among others.
Although Bassitt became a high-leverage reliever in the postseason, he likely will look to sign with a team to be a starter this offseason. The Blue Jays may not have a spot for Bassitt in the rotation, and insider Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors predicts he will leave Toronto and sign a two-year, $38 million deal with the New York Yankees in free agency.
“It’s a nice finish for a pitcher who should again be in demand as he returns to the market,” the article read. “Bassitt turns 37 in February, so he isn’t going to secure another three-year contract. He should be able to secure a two-year deal at a decent annual rate. Bassitt still projects as a rock-solid fourth starter who takes the ball every fifth day.
“A fastball that once sat above 93 MPH now checks in more in the 91-92 range — at least out of the rotation — but it’s good enough stuff to post underlying numbers that align with a 4.00 ERA type pitcher. The Jays were not able to make Bassitt a qualifying offer because he received one from the Mets when he was previously a free agent. Toronto may try to bring him back, but teams like the Braves, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Orioles, Astros, Angels, A’s and Giants could all fit.”
Given his age, Bassitt will likely have to settle for a short-term deal. He likely will go to a contender to chase a World Series, and with the injuries to Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole, the Yankees could use a veteran like Bassitt in the rotation.
Bassitt Wants to Return to Blue Jays
Following the Blue Jays loss in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bassitt made it clear he would like to return to Toronto.
Bassitt completed his three-year, $63 million deal with the Blue Jays and was an effective starter for the team. He
“I hope I have another chance with this group, I really do,” Bassitt said after the Game 7 loss.
Bassitt felt like the Blue Jays group was special and isn’t sure any team will be able to replicate it.
I” love these guys … it’s hard to replicate true love. You can try to replicate this. A lot of people will try, but it’s not really possible,” Basssitt added.
The right-hander went 11-9 with a 3.96 ERA in 32 games, including 31 starts this season. He was 0-0 with a 1.04 ERA in seven relief appearances in the playoffs.
Toronto Exploring Trade Front for Rotation Help
Although Bassitt and Scherzer are both free agents, the Blue Jays are exploring the trade market for another starter.
Toronto’s offseason got off to a big boost with Shane Bieber opting into his $16 million deal. However, ahead of free agency opening, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins revealed the team is exploring the trade market for pitching help.
“We do feel good about the free-agent market in the starting pitching area, relative to most years. It’s a little bit better, seemingly.” Atkins said on Thursday. “We’ll get to work on the trade front, as well, (and) have started that somewhat.”
Toronto’s rotation is currently projected to feature Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Bieber, and Jose Berrios locked into four spots.
