Louisiana State University made the decision last week to fire its head football coach, Brian Kelly, after a 5-3 start to the season, and dropping to the bottom of the SEC standings.
LSU made the move a couple of days after a disastrous 49-25 loss to Texas A&M despite there still being six seasons left on his 10-year, $100 million contract.
On Thursday, Brian Kelly broke the silence following his being fired in a post on X, and he took some time to reflect on his time at LSU, and shares that there is no bad blood between him and the university.

“This journey began with great expectations with my own vision of how to get there. Sometimes the journey does not end the way we hope,” said Kelly.
“But when I think of our time together, I will remember and appreciate what we did accomplish. All of the exceptional student-athletes I had the privilege to coach. A Heisman Trophy winner and more than a dozen Tigers playing on Sundays. 39 players earning SEC Academic Honor Roll honors in 2024 alone. My daughter and son earning advanced degrees from LSU and a third who began working at the university.”
This is how Kelly wraps up the post:
“As everyone heads on their way to see the Tigers play, I wish Coach Wilson, the coaches and our players the best this weekend. I know they will do their best for themselves and for LSU. We will be watching and cheering for you.”
“This journey may have ended, but it’s a journey that will stay with me and my family forever.”

Brian Kelly’s Tenure at LSU
Brian Kelly spent three and a half seasons at LSU, and considering the Tigers had come into 2025 with National Championship aspirations, it was not that shocking that LSU decided to move on after the 5-3 start. Frank Wilson takes over as the interim head coach as the Tigers take on their longtime rival, Alabama, this Saturday. The university also announced shortly following the firing of Brian Kelly that Athletic Director Scott Woodward would also be relieved of his duties.
His tenure as head coach started pretty strongly. He went 10-4 in 2022 and 10-3 in 2023, but things slowed down starting last season when the Tigers went 9-4 and missed out on making the College Football Playoff.
Kelly will certainly be a strong candidate for one of the many open head coaching gigs across college football. All-in-all, Kelly was 34-14 with the Tigers, with an SEC record of 19-10.
The LSU coaching gig comes with a lot of perks, and it will be interesting to see how the Tigers finish the season and think about hiring a new coach. Louisiana has some of the top high school talent in the entire country, and with the new age of NIL and the transfer portal, the Tigers should have no issues reloading a new roster to compete for the CFP in the next year or two.
The combined price that both Scott Woodward and Brian Kelly are owed from LSU eclipses $60 million.
