Browns Hold Workout for Ex-Rams Draft Pick Before Week 10

The Browns will enter their Week 10 game coming out of the bye week with a relatively clean bill of health, as receiver Isaiah Bond is listed as “out” and four players, including rookies Carson Schwesinger (ankle) and Harold Fannin Jr. (hamstring), are questionable. The hope, too, is that receiver Cedric Tillman is back on the field to give quarterback Dillon Gabriel another top target.

Still, with the NFL trade deadline only days behind us, the Browns were seeking to add to their player mix this week, as the team held a workout for a series of  six defensive players, including former Rams sixth-round pick linebacker Ochaun Mathis, who played for the Patriots and Eagles in addition to L.A., and ex-Browns special-teamer Tanner McAlister, a defensive back who signed as an undrafted free agent from Ohio State in 2023.

Also on the docket: linebacker Seth Coleman, defensive back Makari Paige, defensive back Mark Perry and defensive back Mike Smith.

Browns Filling Out Open Spots

The Browns are looking to stock the roster with as much youth as possible, of course, having come out of the NFL trade deadline with not much new to show as far as a direction. The team traded away backup defensive lineman Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to the Bears on Tuesday, but did not make any of the splashy moves that some projected.

There was talk that tight end David Njoku would be on the move, and that the Browns could look to up its haul of upcoming draft picks by dumping other veterans. At the same time, there was talk that the Browns even at 2-6, could be buyers at the deadline and seek to add players.

In the end, though, there was a whole lot of nothing out of Cleveland, and the team will trudge forward, trying to add on the fringes as they go.

Lot of Talk But Slow Trade Deadline in Cleveland

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said after Tuesday had passed that the team’s players did not spend much time concerning themselves with the machinations of the deadline. And in the end, there was good reason for that.

“I don’t know how much guys spend time thinking about those types of things,” Stefanski said. “I know it’s speculative and I know there’s plenty of news outlets that cover those types of things and that’s what you have to do. But our guys don’t spend much time on that. We kind of keep our focus where it is, and so that’s the sense I’ve gotten from the guys.”
