Two dead and 15 injured after wave sweeps holidaymakers into sea in Tenerife

What was supposed to be a quiet afternoon stroll by the sea turned into a tragedy. Around three p.m., a strong and unexpected wave surprised a group of tourists, families and friends ? more than a dozen people ? who were at the fishing pier of the Puerto de la Cruz. The impact of the sea was so sudden that some fell to the ground while others were swept into the water. The scene, according to several witnesses, was genuinely bewildering. Without hesitation, swimmers, neighbors and members of the Sea Red Cross jumped into the water to help those affected. A neighbor immediately alerted 911, triggering a wide-ranging emergency deployment. Several ambulances and patrols from the Local Police ? newly incorporated into the afternoon shift ? and the National Police quickly rushed to the scene. Over the minutes, the number of medical vehicles increased in response to the severity of the injuries and the number of injured. Among those affected was a British tourist who reported, visibly shocked, that his family was scheduled to return to his country tomorrow Sunday. He also highlighted the heroic act of an anonymous woman who, thanks to her CPR skills, managed to keep one of the victims in cardiac arrest alive until the paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, authorities have confirmed one fatal crash victim. Emergency services and law enforcement continue to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident and assess the condition of the injured. Strong waves have killed at least two people and injured a further 15 including a British tourist at a holiday spot in Tenerife.

A 79-year-old Dutch woman was among those swept out to sea near Puerto de la Cruz.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and rescued her from the water, before pronouncing her dead.

A further three people were found with injuries after being caught up in the severe conditions, according to El Periodico.

Among those affected was a British tourist who was due home on Sunday.

He reported that one anonymous woman managed to save a victim suffering a cardiac arrest after performing CPR.

Further east on the same coast, a man died after being swept out to sea in Charco del Viento, which translates to ‘Pool of the Wind’.

Rescuers hoisted the man onto a helicopter before rushing him to Santa Cruz.

However he was confirmed dead due to the seriousness of his injuries once on the ground.

Six more people were dragged into the sea near Roque de las Bodegas in the Anaga zone.

It comes as a warning was issued by authorities for severe coastal weather.
