Mets Trade Idea Lands Angels’ 36 Home Run Slugger in New York

The New York Mets are expected to be big players in MLB’s hot stove season over the next few months. The Mets’ front office has a few key decisions to make regarding free agents, including first baseman Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz (if he doesn’t accept the qualifying offer), and outfielder Cedric Mullins.

There is a small chance that the Mets retain Cedric Mullins, as his time with the team after being traded from the Orioles was disappointing, and New York ultimately did not make the playoffs. Now, in a fresh offseason, David Stearns can make things right by pulling off more meaningful trades. It was recently reported that the Los Angeles Angels may have a pair of outfielders that they are willing to trade, so should the Mets think about making a big splash for one of them?

Mets-Angels Trade Idea Sends Taylor Ward to New York

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Angels may be willing to trade both star outfielders, Jo Adell and Taylor Ward.

It would make sense for the Angels to offload both sluggers, as they need a rebuild under first-year manager Kurt Suzuki. The New York Mets could certainly be interesting suitors if they choose to pursue of either Jo Adell or Taylor Ward.

In this trade idea, it’s the Mets acquiring Taylor Ward, who smashed 36 home runs this season and drove in 103 runs. The 31-year-old Ward isn’t a free agent until 2027. Ward has spent all eight seasons of his career with the Angels, but has really found his power stroke in recent years.

Since 2022, Ward has 98 home runs and an average OPS+ of 116 in those seasons. If there is a time for the Angels to move off Ward, it’s now.

Why Are the Mets a Good Fit?

The Mets are a good fit for a number of reasons. First off, they need a center fielder, and although Taylor Ward plays more left field than center, New York can make some shifts in that outfield to make Ward fit.

If you remember the 2025 trade deadline, the Mets gave up a handful of prospect capital to make the necessary additions. That means if New York were to acquire Ward, it would likely cost them one of their young MLB-ready arms right now, which could be either Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong.

However, a deal like this greatly improves the Mets’ outfield and would pair Juan Soto with another player who has the ability to hit 25+ home runs consistently.

The Angels finished 72-90 in 2025, which was good for last in the American League West. If they are trying to turn things out, trades might be the most viable way to do it.

As the offseason progresses, expect the rumors of Taylor Ward and Jo Adell being traded to other MLB contenders to only strengthen.
