Myles Garrett Puts Browns Teammates on Notice After Falling to Jets

The Cleveland Browns dropped yet another game on Sunday, falling to 2-7 on the season after losing to the New York Jets in Week 10.

Cleveland lost to one of the few teams in the league that entered the weekend with an even worse record than the Browns had, and did so coming off the bye, which afforded the Browns an extra week of preparation time.

Star defensive end Myles Garrett, who tallied one sack and two tackles for loss in his team’s 27-20 defeat, sent a clear message to his teammates following the game.

“I’m going to make sure that there’s no quit in this team,” Garrett told reporters during his postgame press conference. “I haven’t see it before and it’s not going to happen now. I’m going to make sure everybody mans up and still knows exactly what the directive is.”

Garrett entered the day leading the NFL with 15 tackles for loss. He was also second with 10 total sacks, trailing only Brian Burns of the New York Giants (11).

Reporters also asked Garrett for his thoughts on the quarterback position after rookie Dillon Gabriel moved to 1-4 as the starter, while Shedeur Sanders remains on the sidelines as QB2 awaiting his chance to show what he can do.

“Quarterback direction has nothing to do with me,” Garrett responded. “I am worried about the defense and us giving up the points we did and the first downs that we did. Who we stick with at quarterback is up to [head coach] Kevin [Stefanski].”

For his part, Stefanski was immediately clear that Gabriel will remain the starter heading into the team’s Week 11 contest against the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday.

“We’re going to stick with Dillon. Obviously, young players that you’re always trying to get one game better,” Stefanski said. “We have to play better as an offense. We have to coach better.”

Gabriel finished the day 17-of-32 passing for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The Jets defense sacked Gabriel six times for a total loss of 47 yards.

Browns Offense Couldn’t Overcome Meager Jets’ Performance

Stefanski ceded play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Tommy Rees ahead of Sunday’s game in New York, though it made little difference in the overall production of the unit or the outcome of the contest.

Cleveland amassed a total of 278 yards of offense, rushing for 158 yards on the day. Gabriel was the team’s second-leading rusher with 54 yards on five carries, finishing behind only starting running back Quinshon Judkins who had 75 yards on 22 attempts.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland defense held the Jets to just 169 yards of total offense and QB Justin Fields to 6-of-11 passing for 54 yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, Cleveland’s special teams unit surrendered a kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter and the Browns’ offense wasn’t potent enough to put the struggling New York team away.

“Try your best not to point fingers,” Garrett said of Cleveland’s team-wide struggles. “You just try to clear up what you can and execute the best that you can. Be part of the solution.”
