Giants-Bears inactives report: RB D’Andre Swift to play

As expected, Bears running back D’Andre Swift will play Sunday against the Giants at Soldier Field.

Swift was limited in practice Wednesday and a full participant Thursday before sitting out Friday’s practice with what the team called a personal matter. The team called him questionable for Sunday’s game.

He said earlier in the week that he planned on playing against the Giants after missing all three practices last week and the Bengals game because of a groin injury. With Swift out, Kyle Monangai ran 26 times for 176 yards. Only Anthony Thomas ran for more yards as a Bears rookie.

Monangai said after practice Friday that he was ready for whatever role the Bears gave him Sunday at Soldier Field.

“I just gotta be prepared for whatever comes my way,” he said.

Swift said the decision to sit out the Bengals game wasn’t his own. Bears coach Ben Johnson said as much in real time, declaring that the team had to protect Swift from himself, medically, after he’d struggled to shake a groin injury in the previous few weeks. The Bengals game was the first he missed in his Bears career.

On Friday, the Bears ruled out cornerback Josh Blackwell (concussion), receiver Jahdae Walker (concussion), linebacker T.J. Edwards (hand/hamstring) and defensive end Dominique Robinson (ankle). The Bears ruled tight end Durham Smythe actives despite a calf injury and made Stephen Carlson inactive.

Quarterback Case Keenum is out and will serve as the third quarterback.

Gardner-Johnson has three sacks in two games as a Bear.
The Bears are 6-3 — though time, and a much tougher second-half schedule, will tell if they’re good. There’s no doubting Caleb Williams qualifies as elite in the final few minutes, even as he continues to struggle, frustratingly so, earlier in games.
These Bears just don’t completely crumble. How’s that for damning them with faint praise?
