The Philadelphia Phillies should be active this offseason in adding some more talent to their roster.
Philadelphia is coming off a disappointing playoff loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers and should look to add some more power and pitching to its lineup. The Phillies could look to upgrade at third base, and insider Anthony Franco of MLBTradeRumors predicts Philadelphia will sign Alex Bregman to a massive six-year, $160 million deal.
“From all-around production to clubhouse impact, there’s a lot to like with Bregman,” the article read. “Still, he turns 32 in March, and six-year free deals at that age for free agent position players are rare. The last one was Freddie Freeman in March 2022. The obvious number to top is Matt Chapman’s six-year, $151MM extension with the Giants. Chapman is also represented by Boras. Bregman might be happy getting $160MM+ whether it’s on a five or six-year term. …
“If things don’t work out with the Red Sox, the Angels, Blue Jays, Mariners, Mets, and Phillies could be other possibilities.”
Bregman would be a perfect fit for the Phillies as he could start at third base and add more power to the lineup. If Philadelphia re-signs Kyle Schwarber, the top of the line could feature Schwarber, Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Bregman.
Bregman hit .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs last season with the Phillies. He’s a three-time All-Star and is a two-time World Series champion.
Phillies Named a Top Suitor for Bregman
After Philadelphia was eliminated by the Dodgers, it was clear the Phillies had holes in their roster they needed to fill.
One area of need for Philadelphia is to add another hitter, as the Phillies could use some more offense. With that, MLB insider Mark Feinsand of MLB.com named Philadelphia a top suitor for Bregman this offseason.
“The Phillies feel like a team in need of change, and with Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Ranger Suárez among their free agents, change could certainly be in the cards,” Feinsand wrote. “Third baseman Alec Bohm is one year away from free agency, and like the past offseason or two, his name figures to be popular on the trade market. If the Phillies don’t re-sign Schwarber, they could use that money to bring in Bregman, who would be an upgrade over Bohm at third base.”
Bregman would add another middle-of-the-order bat for the Phillies and give them some solid defense as well.
The 31-year-old is a one-time Gold Glove Award winner and a one-time Silver Slugger Award winner.
Philadelphia Could Increase Payroll
The Phillies are in their World Series window, and Philadelphia could look to bolster its roster this offseason.
Although the Phillies had the third-highest payroll in baseball last season, at just over $293 million, they could see that increase.
Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations for the Phillies said the team could see a rise in payroll, as the owner wants to win.
“(Owner) John (Middleton) is very supportive of that,” Dombrowski said. “We have a good club with a lot of good players, but you don’t have unlimited (money) … I don’t think we’re going to have a $400 million payroll. I just don’t think that that’s a practicality. But we will be open minded to get better and make a move.”
The Phillies last won the World Series in 2008.
