Aaron Glenn Addresses Justin Fields’ Brutal Performance Against Browns

The New York Jets won their second game of the season yesterday, besting the Cleveland Browns 27-24.

They won it off the back of a pair of special teams touchdowns and a workhorse performance out of running back Breece Hall.

What New York did have to overcome, though, was another frustrating start from quarterback Justin Fields.

The former Ohio State star finished the game completing six of 11 passes for 54 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

If Hall had not taken a 42-yard screen pass to the house early in the fourth quarter, Fields would’ve finished with 12 passing yards, an absolutely abysmal outing in the modern NFL.

Head coach Aaron Glenn has kept his quarterback situation fluid, declining to name a starter week-to-week.

His tune remained the same at his Monday morning press conference.

Aaron Glenn Evaluates Justin Fields’ Performance

Glenn opened up his press conference, telling reporters not to ask him about the starting quarterback for the New York Jets’ next game, a Thursday Night Football outing against the red-hot New England Patriots.

He did, however, address Fields’ performance against the Cleveland Browns.

“When you get two returns like that on special teams, the offense doesn’t have a good amount of plays, especially in the passing game. He only threw 11 passes, I think he was 6-of-11,” Glenn told the press.

“Obviously, there’s some things that we’ve got to clean up there, but there were also some good things that he did. I know he threw the one pick, I will say this. I was happy that he tried to force the ball, get the ball downfield in that situation.”

Glenn chose to take the glass-half-full approach to Fields’ lackluster outing.

The former defensive coordinator also praised Cleveland’s defensive game plan to slow down Fields and the Jets’ offense.

“I thought Cleveland did a hell of a job with their coverage. They ran this inverted two where the safety ended up being the middle runner. I thought they did a good job with that.”
Still, Glenn declined to comment on who would be under center Thursday night against New England, leaving the door open for veteran backup Tyrod Taylor to get the nod.

Should the Jets Bench Justin Fields?

So far in 2025, Fields’ stats look nice, but those who have watched the New York Jets know those numbers can be a bit misleading.

In eight games, New York’s starting quarterback has completed 63.5% of his passes for 1143 yards, tossing six touchdowns to one interception.

He’s run the ball 60 times for 316 yards, with three rushing touchdowns and three fumbles.

The fact of the matter is, Fields can’t operate the offense at a high enough level, and has been held to less than 50 net passing yards four times in his eight starts.

If not for the Jets’ special teams and a vintage Hall game, New York would have had another frustrating loss on their hands.

It may be time for Taylor to get his second start of the season, his first coming in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Fields was recovering from a concussion.

Taylor, 35, may not be as athletically gifted as the current starter, but he will certainly get the ball out faster and would give the Jets’ passing game an instant boost.
