Anthony Edwards Gives Wholesome Reason For Gifting Jerseys To Young Fans

Anthony Edwards knows a lifelong love for basketball begins at a young age, and that the passion only grows stronger when kids idolize a favorite player. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard says this is why he offers his jerseys to young fans after games.

Near the end of a 144-117 win over the Sacramento Kings on November 9, Edwards called out to a kid in the stands, who ran down behind the Timberwolves’ bench to accept his jersey. It was a wholesome moment born from Edwards’ memories of going to watch his favorite player at Phillips Arena growing up in Atlanta.

“I used to be at the game when Kevin Durant came to play Atlanta for OKC… I used to hope I could get a jersey, but I was always in the nosebleeds,” Edwards said. “So just finding that one fan. He said he supports me a lot and he was super happy to get my attention, so I said I was going to give him my jersey tonight.”

It looks like Edwards gifting jerseys is going to be a regular occurrence this season, and NBA fans couldn’t ask for anything better from one of the league’s star players.

Anthony Edwards Gifts Jerseys To Young Fans

On Sunday, Edwards spotted a young fan in the stands and motioned for him to come down near the Timberwolves’ bench. Even though he was wearing a Kings sweatshirt, Edwards tossed him his black throwback jersey, and the reaction was everything.

This isn’t the first time Edwards has made a young fan’s day. When the Timberwolves were playing the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on November 5, Edwards took off his jersey while on the bench and tossed it to a girl sitting a few rows behind. She later revealed she had just beaten cancer, and that the interaction made her day.

It’s safe to say those kids will be Anthony Edwards fans for life, just as Edwards has been a Kevin Durant fan since he was young. He finally got the chance to play with his idol when the two competed for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

“It’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of,” Edwards said of playing with Durant, according to Marc J. Spears of Andscape. “Him and LeBron are the best two team people. They always want to see the person next to them shine. I’m the same way. It’s perfect.”

Anthony Edwards Making an Impact After Injury

Since returning on November 5 from a hamstring strain that kept him out for four games, Edwards has been finding his rhythm on offense. He scored 37 points in a 137-97 win over the Utah Jazz on November 7 and 26 points in the win over the Kings.

Edwards needs to continue to make strides in his development this season if the Timberwolves are going to advance to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. He’s increased his scoring average for the past three seasons, in which he earned All-Star nods in all of them. An MVP-caliber season from Edwards in 2025-26 could help Minnesota dethrone the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference.
