MLB’s hot stove season is officially here, and for the New York Mets, their front office and owner Steve Cohen will be doing anything it takes this offseason to get the Mets back to the playoffs after a disappointing end to the season and a big collapse in the National League East. President of baseball operations, David Stearns, is the one who pulls the strings in terms of roster management, and this recent bombshell report is already starting to bring in speculative trade rumors.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported today that the Arizona Diamondbacks may be willing to make a blockbuster trade for Ketel Marte, but it would cost a hefty price.

Mets-Diamondbacks Trade Idea Lands Ketel Marte
This is what Nightengale said about the potential of Ketel Marte being moved:
“The Diamondbacks will ask for a lot in return, but they are definitely motivated in moving him with $71 million remaining through 2030. If they donât move him by mid-April, Marte will have 10-and-5 rights and a full no-trade provision.”
Could the Mets be interested in pulling off a deal like this? They should be, as the front office is likely embarrassed that they didn’t make the playoffs this season, which should add some motivation. Aside from Francisco Lindor at shortstop, the Mets could use some help at both third base and second base to make their infield more complete. As Nightengale reported, a deal like this would cost A LOT of either prospect capital or MLB-ready players.

Sarah Stier/Getty ImagesThe Mets placed third baseman Brett Baty on the 10-day IL on Saturday with an oblique injury.
However, Marte is easily one of the best infielders in baseball, and he’d be well worth it. There were some slight rumors of Marte potentially being moved during July’s trade deadline season, as there were reports that some Diamondbacks players were growing frustrated with Marte in the clubhouse.
Ketel Marte is a three-time All-Star, and finished top-3 in NL MVP voting in 2024 after he hit 36 home runs and posted an OPS+ of 156 as a second baseman.
In 2025, Marte hit 28 home runs in 126 games and posted a 145 OPS+ and a .517 slugging percentage. In nine seasons with the Diamondbacks, Marte has 168 home runs and an OPS+ of 128.

What Would the Mets Have to Give Up?
As Nightengale reported, a trade like this would come at a steep cost; however, the Mets have capital that they could afford to give up to land the All-Star second baseman.
In this trade idea, the Mets would have to give up third baseman Brett Baty, Huascar Brazoban, Jonah Tong, and potentially a prospect or two. That’s a three-four player deal for just Marte; that is how much value Ketel brings to an MLB organization.
As the rumors start to strengthen in the next few months, expect the New York Mets to be in the sweepstakes as a potential suitor for Ketel Marte.
