Sean McDermott Delivers Strong Response to Brian Daboll Joining Bills

Former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will be looking for a new job after the New York Giants fired him on Monday.

The Giants started the season off with a 2-8 record, and after another loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, the team decided it was time to move on.

Despite his previous experience with the Bills coaching staff, head coach Sean McDermott made it clear that Daboll will not be joining Buffalo this season.

Daboll Won’t Be Joining The Bills This Season

“Brian is a great coach, unfortunate to see that happen to him, but at this point, that’s not under any type of consideration,” McDermott said on Monday, via Buffalo Bills On SI Alex Brasky.

Sometimes, head coaches who get fired during the season will return to their former team to take over in some role, but that doesn’t appear to be happening with Daboll and Buffalo.

Daboll served as the Bills’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, playing a crucial role in the development of quarterback Josh Allen into one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

When the Giants brought in Daboll, they expected him to bring out the same potential in Daniel Jones that he had with Allen. However, that didn’t pan out, and New York ended up releasing Jones in the middle of last season.

McDermott seems pretty happy with current offensive coordinator Joe Brady and praised the young coach on Monday.

“Joe is a good coach,” McDermott added. “We’ve got a really good offensive staff.”

There is a chance that Brady might not be with the Bills next season, which could leave the door open for Daboll to return.

Brady Could Leave Buffalo In 2026

Last offseason, Brady was highly regarded as a leading candidate for NFL head coaching positions, and the New Orleans Saints appeared interested in him. However, he ultimately decided to withdraw from the running for the job.

This offseason, he is likely to be a candidate for a handful of NFL head coaching jobs or even a college job, such as LSU, where he previously served as the passing game coordinator/receiving coach in 2019. According to Matt Boecker from Advance Local, Brady could be a strong candidate for the LSU head coaching job.

“The biggest knock on Brady is his lack of head coaching experience. It would be a huge risk for LSU to hire a 36-year-old with no time spent as a head coach,” Boecker wrote on Friday. “However, Lanning got his first head coaching job at Oregon. The same is true for Kirby Smart at Georgia and Freeman at Notre Dame.

“If the Tigers are convinced that Brady is the right person to hire, his lack of experience shouldn’t be a factor. It could even be viewed as a positive. If Brady becomes a grand-slam hire, LSU will have a top-tier head coach for years to come.”

If Brady doesn’t return to Buffalo next season and Daboll doesn’t get a head coaching job, then he could head back to Buffalo.
