The New York Giants said farewell to head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, November 10, and it wasn’t a surprise, since the team’s record is 2-8, which puts them smack dab at the bottom of the NFC East. Not that it was Daboll’s fault, but after the team wrapped up last season with a 3-14 record, it was understood throughout the league that if Daboll didn’t turn things around in 2025, he would no longer be part of the New York Giants‘ franchise.
The event came one day after the Giants fell to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, September 10, in a 24-20 loss. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will serve as interim head coach.
“We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position,” president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said in a joint statement. He added, “We appreciate Coach Daboll for his contributions to our organization. We wish the Daboll family all the best in the future.”
As it turns out, a familiar face is being named as a favorite to come back to New York. He’s a Super Bowl-winning coach, too.
Former New York Giants Staffer Named a Favorite for Coaching Position
Plenty of coaches will want a shot at the New York Giants gig. Even though the team needs work, this is the Big Apple, and it doesn’t get bigger than that.
In a Monday, November 10, feature for CBS Sports, Tyler Sullivan names Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as a coaching candidate, looking at the research and Spagnuolo’s stats.
“Spags is a very familiar figure for the New York Giants. Already, he’s had two stints with the organization, with the latest seeing him serve as the interim head coach in 2017,” Sullivan notes in the piece, which was during part of the Eli Manning era. “Since then, he’s been with the Chiefs and emboldened his reputation as arguably the best defensive coordinator in the NFL.”
Sullivan adds, “As we’ve noted, the development of Dart is paramount, but New York also has fantastic pieces on defense that Spagnuolo could certainly get the most out of. With the right offensive coordinator, this reunion could make some sense if Spagnuolo feels he’s done all he can do with Kansas City.”
Of course, Spagnuolo may be happy with the Kanas City Chiefs and want to stay there, but there’s something incredibly tempting about being thrust into the head coaching position in the No. 1 market in the U.S. Plus, he’s been with the team before, so that combination would be hard for Spagnuolo to resist. It would be interesting to see a defensive-minded coach at the helm of the New York Giants.
An Offensive-Minded Coach for the New York Giants
For those looking for an offensive-minded coach, there’s Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. In a Monday, November 10, piece for GmenHQ, Matt Sidney gives a nod to Kubiak.
“In his first year running Seattle’s offense, he’s helped turn quarterback Sam Darnold into an MVP candidate and has wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba flirting with a historic season,” he adds. “The Giants don’t have that kind of firepower yet, but pairing Kubiak with Dart and a healthy Malik Nabers would be a heck of a start.”
Whoever takes on this role will have a huge responsibility ahead of them, and they’ll also have to continue to develop budding quarterback Jaxson Dart. Kubiak and Spagnuolo would both make interesting candidates.
