Seahawks Star Doesn’t Hold Back on Giants’ Firing of Brian Daboll

Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams still has strong ties to the New York Giants, where he played from 2019 to 2023. During his stint there, he was coached by Brian Daboll.

On November 10, New York announced it had parted ways with Daboll after another collapse, this time a double-digit loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 10. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will serve as the interim head coach, while general manager Joe Schoen will continue to lead the search for Daboll’s replacement.

When Williams appeared on the November 10 edition of “The Rich Eisen Show,” he was caught off guard by the news. The veteran lineman admitted he had not heard about Daboll’s firing until it came up during the interview and gave an unfiltered reaction to it.

“That’s actually news to me right now because I just woke up and was kind of focused on my team this morning,” Williams said about Daboll’s firing. “[I] came in and worked out, so this is news to me; I always thought of him as a great guy. He was a player’s coach.

“I got along with him pretty well, and I’m definitely wishing him luck on his future; I definitely got to hit up some of my guys that I know over there and see how they feel and see how they’re doing.”

Giants Explain Brian Daboll Firing

After the Giants officially parted ways with Daboll, co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch released a joint statement outlining the reasoning behind New York’s decision.

“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise,” the joint statement said (h/t ESPN). “We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”

“We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development,” Mara added. “Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect.

“These are difficult decisions, and John and I do not take them lightly, but we feel like this is the right thing to do at this time and will allow us to move forward,” Tisch added.

Could Two Seahawks Coaches Be on the Giants’ Radar?

While the Giants are still early in their head coaching search and likely won’t name anyone until after the season is over, there are two names from the Seahawks that ESPN is linking to as potential candidates to take over the job that’s now vacant.

“To shore up the defense, emerging coordinators such as Jeff Hafley (Packers), Jesse Minter (Chargers), Kelvin Sheppard (Lions) and Aden Durde (Seahawks) would be good to explore,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote.

“On offense, Todd Monken (Ravens) has been a fixture on the scene and Jim Bob Cooter (Colts) and Klint Kubiak (Seahawks) are making their mark this year. You get the point: The possibilities are endless.”
