After another disappointing loss for the now 5-3-1 Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, Packers insider Matt Schneidman is speculating that Matt LaFleur may be coaching for his job for the remainder of the 2025 season.
LaFleur’s contract runs through the 2026 season at $5 million per year. The Green Bay front office wouldn’t be out of place to make an ultimate decision on him following this season though, as they’ll want to avoid having a coach in a lame duck situation.
As Schneidman aptly refers to in his column for The Athletic, it’s not that Lafleur isn’t a good NFL coach, he may just not be suited for this current iteration of the Green Bay Packers. This roster is set up to be legitimate contenders, but it’s put up a few stinkers this season, especially in the last couple of weeks with a 10-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and a 16-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
LaFleur has been the Packers HC since 2019, taking over for the final four years of the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay. He led them to the playoffs in the first three years before faltering in year four. Then, in 2023, the Jordan Love era began, and LaFleur has brought them to the playoffs in each season, but ultimately come up short in the clutch.
LaFleur’s Messaging Running Stale In Green Bay?
The Packers struggles this season has been rooted in offensive inconsistency. In their three losses, the offense has put up 10, 13, and 7 points, but what makes these losses feel more deflating is that the defense has only allowed 13, 16, and 10 points in those games. Those are the three lowest point totals the Packers have allowed this season.
So the question boils down to whether LaFleur’s messaging has just fallen on flat ears with the offense. Jordan Love has looked remarkably average in a number of games this season, a bad sign for the guy who is projected to be a franchise cornerstone for the coming years.
It happens all the time in professional sports, where a coach just loses the room no matter how good he is at game-planning, play-calling, etc. LaFleur has proved that he is a good NFL coach, even a great one, but he will have to right the ship for the remainder of the season and not flounder in the playoffs if he wants to grab another extension with the Packers.
LaFleur Answers Question About Job Security Following MNF Loss
Schneidman asked LaFleur how he felt about his job security following the Packers loss on Monday night.
âIâll leave that for everybody else to decide,â LaFleur said. âIâll just focus on the day-to-day and trying to do â I feel like youâre always coaching for everything in this league, you know? Thatâs just my mindset, itâs always been that way. You canât ever exhale. Youâve got to always be pushing. Thatâs just my mindset and that will be my mindset until they tell me not to coach anymore.â
It was a very candid response to a tough question, and it truly sounded like a response that shows that LaFleur hasn’t lost his confidence with this team, and nor should he.
All of the pieces are in place for the Packers to make a run at a Super Bowl, now it’s up to LaFleur to determine whether it will be him leading Green Bay to the promised land, or if it will be someone else in the 2026 season.
