Ruby Rose brands Sydney Sweeney ‘a cretin’ as new movie Christy tanks
Hollywood leading lady Sydney Sweeney has faced sharp criticism from Australian actress and TV presenter Ruby Rose after the 28 year-old Euphoria star attempted to defend the poor box office return of her latest movie — the boxing biopic Christy. The film, based around the life of champion pugilist Christy Martin, opened across 2,011 US cinemas recently, yet pulled in only (£994,605) on its opening weekend. That works out at a per theatre average of just $649 (£495). Rose accused Sweeney of being disconnected from the character at the centre of the biopic, a point she pushed further in a series of lengthy posts where, at one point, she called the Immaculate and Eden actress ‘a cretin’. Sweeney had shared her own thoughts online soon after the film struggled to find an audience. She insisted she felt no regret about taking the role. ‘If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded’ she wrote. ‘So yes I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.’ Her comments arrived as debate about the project intensified. (Picture: Getty Images)
Rose chose Threads as the medium to offer up her version of events and made clear that her frustration centred on Sweeney’s performance, rather than the financial result. Known for her work in John Wick and Pitch Perfect, as well as Orange Is The New Black, Rose said she had once been attached to a much earlier version of the film. She claimed familiarity with the original script and with the real figure behind the drama. The actor described the abandoned project as pivotal in shaping her career. (Picture: Getty Images)
‘The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry’ she wrote, referencing the fighter’s nickname. ‘Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.’ Rose argued that her connection to the subject meant that she understood the story’s cultural weight. And she hinted that Sweeney lacked that grounding or knowledge. (Picture: Getty Images)
Christy Martin identifies as lesbian and has been married to a woman since 2017. With her earlier relationships with women being depicted in the finished film. Rose, a long-standing and prominent figure in the global LGBTQ+ community, accused Sweeney of failing to reflect the identity that shaped Martin’s life. (Picture: Getty Images)
She continued: ‘For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the “people.” None of “the people” want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.’ Her remarks quickly spread across social platforms, drawing strong reactions from fans of both performers. The dispute surfaced at a time when Sweeney has already been under scrutiny following her appearance in a controversial American Eagle Jeans advert. During the summer, social media users accused the campaign of promoting eugenics. Sweeney did not address the claims at the time but has since broken her silence. She said the experience taught her to distance herself from online noise while still acknowledging how intense internet debate can become. (Picture: Getty Images)
In an interview with GQ she issued a sharp response to the backlash, saying: ‘I did a jean ad. The reaction was definitely a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.’ When asked to address the claims that the advert promoted ‘genetic superiority’ she told the reporter: ‘I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.’ (Picture: Getty Images) Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
