Multiple people have been killed and more injured as a bus rammed into a covered bus shelter in the centre of Stockholm.
The incident happened at around 3.24pm local time in Valhallavägen Street in Östermalm, an upscale district in the Swedish capital.
Police confirmed that the driver of the bus has been arrested, adding that it was too early to say what had caused the crash.
‘There are both injured and deceased people in the incident,’ a statement said.
‘Police are for the moment not commenting on the number, gender or ages of the victims.’
Local media reported that there are victims who are seriously injured and that some have been rushed to hospital.
Footage circulating on X shows a large number of police cars, ambulances and emergency services units at the site, with paramedics treating victims on stretchers.
A witness told Expressen the crash was ‘the worst thing’ they had ever seen.
‘Unbelievably horrible, I heard a lot of screaming. I hope the injured are okay and get the best care,’ they added.
A large cordon has been set up, and most of Valhallavägen Street, betweenOdengatan and Engelbrektsgatan, has been closed.
Police spokesperson Nadya Norton said a manslaughter investigation has been opened as a matter of routine.
‘We need to question the driver, then we will see if he’s going to be released or detained,’ Norton said.
A spokesperson for bus company Transdev, Lovisa Åbom, confirmed that one of their vehicles was the one involved in the crash.
She told local media: ‘It is one of our buses that was involved and it is a double-decker. I also know that there are injuries, but I have no information about how it happened at the moment’.
Prime minister Ulf Kristersson said in a post on X: ‘We do not yet know the cause of this, but right now my thoughts are foremost with those who have been affected and their families.’
Meanwhile, deputy prime minister Ebba Busch said that the government is closely following the developments and is in contact with authorities.
She added: ‘I am devastated by the terrible news that people have lost their lives after a bus crashed into a bus shelter in central Stockholm.’
