Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo Reacts to Speculation About Return to Giants

After a disappointing 2-8 record following the first 10 games of the 2025 NFL season and a four-game losing streak, the New York Giants decided it was finally time to part ways with head coach Brian Daboll.

This move by the Giants, which many anticipated would happen at some point this season, opens up one of the most attractive head coaching jobs in the league. That said, a few notable names have surfaced as potential candidates for the coaching vacancy, including Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

With speculation running rampant around the NFL about who will be the next head coach of the storied Giants franchise, Spagnuolo has begun to receive questions about whether he’d take the job in New York.

The 66-year-old has his links to the Giants organization, so it’s no surprise his name would surface as a potential candidate and target for New York. Still, he’s staying focused on his current job, which he made clear, with a smile on his face, during Chiefs media availability on Thursday.

“Yeah, we’re good. We’re playing Denver,” Spagnuolo said. “That make sense? Thanks guys.”

Unless the Giants move quickly to hire a new head coach, which is unlikely, as most teams take their time and assess the available candidates once the season concludes, Spagnuolo will likely continue to hear the noise and address questions about his future for the remainder of the 2025 campaign.

List of Coaching Candidates Continues to Grow for Giants Job

With a promising young quarterback under center in Jaxson Dart and other talented youngsters on the roster, like wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo, the Giants’ coaching vacancy will be the talk of the league for the rest of the season and perhaps the majority of the NFL offseason.

The list of notable names that have started to be mentioned as targets for the Giants’ brass includes Jon Gruden, Antonio Pierce, Bill Belichick, Mike McCarthy, Vance Joseph, Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury and even Lane Kiffin from the college ranks.

This list will likely continue to grow in the early going, especially when firings start to happen toward the end of the regular season.

Belichick is an interesting candidate, considering his history with the Giants franchise, as he was the team’s defensive coordinator under then-head coach Bill Parcells. Belichick won two Super Bowl titles in New York and ironically lost two Super Bowls to the Giants while at the helm of the New England Patriots.

There’s no question that the Giants franchise still holds a special place in Belichick’s heart, and it might be the job that he’s held out for in terms of returning to the NFL as a head coach.

Currently, Belichick is trying his luck on the college level with the University of North Carolina, which hasn’t gone well thus far, with the team sporting a losing overall record of 4-5.
