A handwritten note Taylor Swift penned to Liam Payne is up for thousands at auction, just over a year after the One Direction alum’s fatal fall from a balcony in Argentina.
British auction house Omega Auctions anticipates the note, dated Dec. 1, 2017, will sell for anywhere from £5,000 (about $6,579) to £10,000 (about $13,158) when it goes up for auction Dec. 2.
“Liam, Long time no see!” the “Life of a Showgirl” crooner wrote on stationery emblazoned with her name.
“I’m so excited for you, you’re crushing it out there. I’m obsessed with ‘Bedroom Floor.’ It’s so cool to see you from afar. I’m always cheering you on. Good luck tonight! Taylor.”
The letter â accompanied with an envelope labeled with Payne’s first name, which Swift adorned with several stars â was delivered to the late musician just ahead of London’s Jingle Bell Ball, where Swift also performed.
The back of the envelope read, “Nashville, Tennessee” and was closed with a “T” wax seal.
Swift has a history with multiple One Direction alumni, having previously dated Harry Styles, who is widely believed by her fans to have inspired “1989” hits like “Style” and “Out of the Woods.” In 2017, she recorded “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Zayn Malik, for the “Fifty Shades Darker” soundtrack.
The letter is up for auction following Payne’s death on Oct. 16, 2024, when he had multiple substances in his system and fell from a balcony at the hotel where he was staying in Buenos Aires. He was 31.
In December 2024, authorities charged employees of the CasaSur hotel as well as Payne’s friend Roger Nores in his death. Charges against were dropped against Nores and two employees, while the two employees accused of helping supply drugs to the singer are awaiting trial.
