Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Manchester United’s decision to sign Senne Lammens and believes the goalkeeper has been ‘outstanding’ since joining Old Trafford.

United were in the market for a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window but after failing to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, the club opted to bring in Lammens in an £18 million deal from Royal Antwerp.

Lammens had made just 52 appearances in the Belgian Pro League before his move to the Premier League and United had faced questions over whether the 23-year-old had enough experience to immediately become Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, Lammens has looked solid in his first five appearances for United so far and Ferguson has also been impressed with the club’s summer signing.

When asked if he is happy with United’s recent run of form, Ferguson told Raceday RTV: ‘Well, they are, the signs… the manager has had some good signs.

‘Particularly the goalkeeper has been outstanding, he’s only played three or four games and he’s looking really good.

‘Of course, Mbeumo and Cunha, the new players from Wolves and Brentford, they’ve added to it. I hope the manager gets a bit of success because at United you need to have success. The signs are getting better.

‘I think back-to-back wins is something teams like United should always expect. But having gone through a cycle where the improvement has to come by waiting and being patient, they are enjoying it now.’

Speaking earlier this month, United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, revealed that the club’s former goalkeeping coach, Tony Coton, who now works as a scout, played a key role in bringing Lammens to Old Trafford.

‘Tony Coton was putting Senne on my radar 12 months ago, and he was relentless with it,’ Wilcox said.

‘This guy is going to be a top signing for us, and he has started well, but he has got to keep it going. He is very reflective, and he is very professional with his approach.

‘We were always looking at goalkeepers who have huge potential. Senne was available and we decided to move, but it wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction.’
