Rams Add Former Jets, Panthers ‘Weapon’ as Final Decision Nears

With just over 24 hours to go before they take on the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11, the Los Angeles Rams tweaked their roster again, this time calling second-year kick Harrison Mevis up from their practice squad.

The Rams called Mevis up in Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, and he will reprise his role this week.

However, the Rams are inching closer to a final decision.

The Rams announced with a post on X on November 15 that they “Activated, from Practice Squad (Standard Elevation) K Harrison Mevis.”

Mevis, an undrafted free agent in 2024, has yet to attempt a field goal, but he went 6-for-6 on his extra point tries. His predecessor, 2024 sixth-round Rams draft pick Joshua Karty, is 23 of 26 on his point-afters and 10 of 15 on FGAs.

That steadiness, while only part of the overall picture in the kicking game, bolstered the Rams’ faith in Mevis enough to warrant running it back for at least another week.

The Rams can make this same move just once more, though.

Mevis, like any other player on a team’s practice squad, can only be called up from the practice squad three times during a season. Once a practice squad player is out of elevation eligibility, their team must sign them to the active roster to use them again in a game.

Mevis, 23, had never kicked in a regular-season NFL game before last week, despite spending time with the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets during his young career.

Known as the “Thiccer Kicker,” Mevis does have a following,

“He’s 6’0”, 242-pounder went 20/21 on field goals with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions,” the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast handle posted on X on November 5, after the Rams initially signed Mevis to their practice squad. “Dude is a weapon.”

After he signed with the Jets, UStadium posted on X in June that “Mevis holds the SEC record for the longest FG ever (61 yards) and was nearly perfect for the Birmingham Stallions

Rams Injury Report Brings Good News

Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams

Mevis’ addition was anticipated following Rams head coach Sean McVay’s comments. McVay also offered encouraging updates about defensive lineman Kobie Turner and wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams all but cleared himself in comments made to the media on Friday.

Turner’s status, however, remains up in the air, while McVay told reporters that he expected to have both players available.

“Only people that’ll be listed as questionable will be Davante and Kobie,” McVay said on November 14. “Kobe’s going to be able to go today. Feel good. It’s kind of semantical. So, unless there’s setbacks that are unforeseen, expect those guys to be ready to go. And we’re looking forward to a great game on Sunday.”

The Rams have a chance to claim sole possession of first place in the NFC West.

They can also win their fifth straight game by defeating the Seahawks, a task that, while still challenging, will be far easier to achieve if Adams and Turner both play on Sunday.
