The Packers went to New York in Week 11 seeking to right themselves after two disastrous losses at home, on Monday night to the Eagles, and back in Week 9 to the Panthers, games in which they produced a measly 20 points of offense. And in a sense, they did right themselves: The Packers came out with a 27-20 win over the Giants on a blustery day in the Meadowlands, getting their record back to 6-3-1 and keeping them in the race for the NFC North title.
The problem, though, is that it was a generally ugly game, marred by dropped passes, missed kicks (two blown extra points by backup kicker Lucas Havrisik) and the defense’s struggles against a feisty Giants offense led by veteran backup Jameis Winston.
And there were injuries. There was a scare from quarterback Jordan Love, who left the game briefly after injuring his left (non-throwing) shoulder, and, of greater concern, there was star running back Josh Jacobs, who tried to play through a knee injury he suffered in the first quarter, but ultimately left the game for good early in the second quarter.
Josh Jacobs Had Good Start in Week 11
Jacobs had gotten off to a solid start in the game for the Packers, with 40 yards on seven carries, but landed awkwardly out of bounds on a run with 9:12 to go in the first quarter. The Packers had no further details on Jacobs’ injury, but in his postgame media session, coach Matt LaFleur conceded he is worried.
“I think any time a player, especially of his magnitude, any time a player doesn’t finish a game, you’re always concerned about the welfare of them,” LaFleur said.
Packers Didn’t Have to ‘Adjust Too Much’ With Josh Jacobs Out
The positive for the Packers was that, behind Jacobs, backup Emanuel Wilson was able to give the team some production. Wilson had 11 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown, as well as a catch for nine yards.
He also caught the 2-point attempt after the Packers’ final touchdown to give them a more comfortable seven-point lead.
Love was asked about adjusting the offense once Jacobs went out: “I don’t think you have to adjust too much. Obviously, it’s tough whenever people go down. But like we always say, next man up mentality. Emanuel Wilson came in, obviously he has played a lot of ball. But he did a great job tonight of just finding aways to keep going.”
Packers Lost Jordan Love, Too
As for his own injury, Love downplayed the severity. He did come back to play, after all, and led the Packers to the win with 174 yards and two touchdowns. Malik Willis led the Packers on a touchdown drive immediately after Love’s injury.
“Went in, got it evaluated and I figured it was good enough to come back, so I went back in. It was definitely not fun. Small injury, so we’ll re-evaluate it when we get back, look at it, see what’s going on. But it was not fun,” Love said.
The injury was noticeable throughout the game, Love said, but nothing too severe.
“It was definitely manageable. It was something I was able to play through. It definitely was there but it was manageable,” he said.
