The Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles went at it on Sunday, November 16, for “Sunday Night Football” in Philadelphia, and the game was packed with high-stakes moments. While the first half of the contest was slow-moving, the Lions did score a touchdown in the second quarter, thanks to a blockbuster play between quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Jameson Williams.
During the play, Williams displayed his impressive speed and took a catch to run 40 yards for a touchdown, rounding out a three-play, 74-yard drive. But, when he made the play, Williams leapt onto the stanchion to celebrate. “Jameson Williams did the Antonio Brown touchdown celebration and got flagged for it,” Football Forever stated. While being happy about a touchdown is fine, the NFL doesn’t like it when players celebrate too much on the field, and he was hit with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The penalty cost Detroit 15 yards and it ended up also costing them the extra point. During the game’s windy conditions at Lincoln Financial Field, Lions kicker Jake Bates didn’t make the 48-yard extra point with a kick that went too far right, keeping the score tied at 6-6. At the end of the half, the Eagles scored a touchdown to head into halftime with the lead.
But, the story doesn’t end there. Williams may be in for additional punishment from the NFL once next weekend rolls around.
Jameson Williams of the Detroit Lions and the NFL’s Rules
Every Saturday during the season, the NFL hands down punishments to players for actions taken during the previous week’s games. The NFL states on their website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity” and that the NFL and NFL Players Association agree on the set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures.
The NFL routinely sends out punishments for actions that are deemed unsportsmanlike conduct, such as Williams’ moves. The Detroit Lions were already hit with that 15-yard penalty, so the NFL could deem that enough, but it would be normal for the NFL to also give Williams a fine.
Unsportsmanlike conduct fines can be hefty, too. For example, in last weekend’s Lions-Commanders game, Washington defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was fined $28,555 for unsportsmanlike conduct and “conduct with an official” in the second quarter of the game, which was also one of the largest punishments of the week. According to the NFL, the funds raised from those fines will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”
Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Jameson Williams Talks Dan Campbell
Before the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell dropped the news that he’ll be calling all the offensive plays going forward. He did that in the Washington game, and now, he says he’ll be doing it for all of the season’s remaining matchups.
Williams was asked about the move, and he seemed happy with the move. “I think the game was just called a lot smoother,” Williams said on “The Insiders.” “We spread it out well, everybody got a chance, and we just created explosiveness when our numbers were called.”
