Eagles Defense Smother the Lions and Find a Way to Win Again

In a game that set offense back a couple of decades, the Philadelphia Eagles managed to do what they usually do – win.  It wasn’t pretty but none of them are these days.  The only thing more anemic than Philly’s offense was their countepart’s from the Motor City.

The Eagles’ Cooper DeJean picked off the Lions‘ Jared Goff  and returned it to the Lions 11 yard line on the first Detroit drive of the game.  But the Birds could only managd a Jake Elliott 27 yard field goal to give Philly a 3-0 lead. After the Eagles went four and out and twice three and out on three respective series’, they put together a nine-play drive that only went 27 yards but resulted in a 34 yard field goal after Philly stuffed a Lions’ fake punt at the Detroit 43.  All told the Eagles stopped the Lions five times on five fourth down attempts, something they’ve never done in their 92 year history.

But then it took just three plays for Detroit to go 74 yards as Jameson Williams caught a laser from Goff  for 40 yards and a touchdown but the PAT was missed after Williams picked up an unsportsmanlike penalty post touchdown to move the extra point back to the 38 yard-line.

The Eagles offense appeared to settle down a bit becuase when they got the ball back they went 64 yards in 10 plays resulting in a one yard tush-push plunge by Jalen Hurts with :18 seconds left in the first half to give the Birds a 13-6 lead at the half.

The Eagles only managed a field goal in the second half but their defense smothered Detroit’s normally explosive offense.  Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis combined for five balls batted down while the Birds Gang Green defense held Goff to 14 of 37 for 255 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int and 2 sacks.  The former number 1 overall pick was just 2 for his last 18 passes but the Lions did manage to cut the Eagles lead to just seven, 16-9, after the Birds were stopped on consecutive tush-pushes late in the fourth quarter.

Jalen Hurts finished 14/28 for a paltry 135 yards and no TDs but 0 interceptions either.  A.J. Brown caught seven balls for 49 yards on 11 targets.

The Eagles move to an NFC best 8-2, tied with the Rams and head to Dallas next week for a Sunday game at 4:25.
