Jared Goff Reacts to Lions Pass Protection After Eagles Loss

Quarterback Jared Goff turned in his worst performance of the season during the 16-9 loss in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Goff struggled in part because the Detroit Lions offensive line wasn’t able to give him a lot of consistent protection.

While asking a question to Goff in his Week 11 postgame press conference, one reporter described the quarterback as “under siege” versus the Eagles. Goff, though, tried to avoid directly throwing his pass protection under the bus for the poor Week 11 offensive performance.

“I don’t know, I don’t know,” Goff said to reporters when asked if the Eagles pressure was the worst he had seen in awhile. “I think [the Eagles] did a good job; I do — I think they did a really good job.

“They’re aware of how teams want to attack them, and they know if you are going to throw the ball quick, they can stop and put their hands up. They understand that.

“[The Eagles] also know that if it’s a longer drop back, to get their pass rush going. They did that to some extent. I don’t want to take any credit away from them. But we shot ourselves in the foot a whole lot, and it hurt us.”

Goff finished Sunday night 14 of 37 for 255 yards. His 37.8% completion percentage set a new season low. His previous low in that category this year was 59.3%.

Goff also had one touchdown and an interception with two sacks.

QB Jared Goff Unable to Convert Key Fourth Downs for Lions

Offensively, the Lions like to live and die on fourth down. Against the Eagles, the Lions died on the crucial down.

Detroit went 0-for-5 on fourth down, coupled with just a 3 of 13 conversion rate on third down.

That prevented the Lions from scoring on several drives. But the most crucial play of the game was a Philadelphia stop at the goal line in the third quarter.

Facing third-and-goal at the Eagles 4-yard line while trailing by seven, the Lions gained one combined yard on the next two plays.

“We did feel like we moved the ball pretty decently at times throughout the game. We got down there, stalled out there a few times,” Goff said to the media. “Obviously, the fourth downs weren’t good enough. You give a ton of credit to them. They’re a good, [expletive] defense.

“You’d like to think if we were able to get a fourth down or two, it changes the game. Even some of those third downs, but yeah. They played well. We weren’t even close up to snuff, today, offensively.”

Eagles Used Deflections at Line of Scrimmage to Stop Lions Passing Game

Philadelphia only brought down Goff twice. However, the Eagles pass rush also disrupted the game with deflections from the defensive line.

Eagles defensive linemen Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis combined for five pass defenses Sunday. That was a major reason why Goff posted the worst completion percentage of his career versus Philadelphia.

With the defeat, the Lions fell to 6-4 and into third place in the NFC North. But the team will have a chance to regroup against the New York Giants before then facing the Green Bay Packers in a critical Thanksgiving matchup.

Goff told reporters the elements didn’t impact his throwing ability or the rest of the team in Philadelphia. But the Lions could also benefit from playing the next three games at home.

The Lions won’t play outside again until Week 18 versus the NFC North’s current first-place team, the Chicago Bears.
