Phone snatchers face instant karma from angry passers-by
Bystanders in Buenos Aires were left stunned after a gutsy tourist fought back against two motorcycle robbers in a dramatic street struggle that was all caught on video. The footage shows the moment a routine stop at a pedestrian crossing turned violent as one of the pair tried to steal a phone from an inattentive cyclist. The attempted robbery quickly spiralled as the victim refused to let the thief escape with her treasured piece of tech. (Picture: JGBT7/e2w)
The tourist was identified as 33-year-old Russian citizen Alexandra Doketova, who had been riding her bicycle through the Argentine capital. While stopped waiting at the crossing, she found herself targeted by two men on a motorbike. One leaned across and tried to rip the phone out of her hand, expecting her to surrender it instantly. Instead she made a snap decision that changed proceedings quite dramatically… (Picture: JGBT7/e2w)
Rather than release her grip and give the phone to the opportunistic bandits, she clutched hold of the suspect’s leg and clung on with all her strength. The man panicked as the bike lurched forward, with his partner speeding ahead to flee the scene. Alexandra was dragged along the road during the robbers’ chaotic attempt to break free and escape. The footage then shows her refusing to let go – even as the ground scraped beneath her. (Picture: JGBT7/e2w)
Drivers nearby began slowing down as they realised exactly what it was that was happening. Several motorists stopped their cars right in front of the struggling pair, forming a kind of metal barrier that blocked one of the suspect’s escape route out of the situation (the thief driving the bike managed to speed away). With the remaining thief’s escape options cut off, he stumbled and fell as people rushed from their vehicles to restrain him. They pulled him to the tarmac and pinned him there while Alexandra recovered her phone. (Picture: JGBT7/e2w)
Witnesses didn’t exactly hold back as they restrained the man and even kicked him in a bid to stop him getting up and running off. The newly-formed group of vigilantes then held the phone thief down on the side of the road while they waited for officers to arrive. Police reached the scene shortly after and detained the suspect as crowds gathered around. Local media later confirmed that the second man didn’t evade capture for long, either. He was arrested a few hours later after officers tracked him down elsewhere in the city. (Picture: JGBT7/e2w)
Alexandra was left with minor head injuries from the ordeal which unfolded on the busy street in the capital city. Police later raided the homes of the suspects and uncovered 10 mobile phones believed to have been stolen. Investigators also confirmed that both men had previous criminal records. However, a court ruled that the alleged thieves shouldn’t be kept in custody. The decision triggered outrage in Buenos Aires where attacks on tourists have been rising. A witness who saw the shocking encounter questioned how the ruling had been reached, saying: ‘I don’t know what more proof they want. Everything can be seen on the cameras.’ (Picture: JGBT7/e2w)
The video has since spread across local and global platfirns as another example of locals stepping in when street crime is carried out in broad daylight. The case continues the debate across the Argentine capital as residents call for stronger action to protect visitors and locals and curb rising theft from roving bike gangs.
