Freebie of the week: Doo Dah Parade event replaces procession in Pasadena

For those of you who love the demented Doo Dah Parade of Pasadena, well, here’s the bad news. It’s not being held this year.

But the good news is that fans are gathering anyway on what would have been the parade date — Sunday, Nov. 23. They’re calling this a “two-part celebration of music, mayhem and merriment in Old Town Pasadena.” What does that mean?

They’re planning to start out at the Dog Haus Biergarten on Big Bang Theory Way “with “Doo Dah’s Big Bang!” an alley-side cabaret of Doo Dah legends and curious newcomers.” From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this is slated to include live music, other performances and antics from Doo Dah lore. There will be tryouts and crowning of the Doo Dah Queen from noon until 3 p.m. Anyone (or anything) can enter. Then, there’s a 21-and-over after party at the Old Towne Pub including Ashton Slater’s Grateful Get-Down.  pasadenadoodahparade.info/

The Doo Dah Parade started in Pasadena in 1978 as a hilarious send-up of the more staid (and famous) Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day. Marchers included the “Revenge of the Baby Seals,” where marchers in seal costumes clubbed hunters and the briefcase brigade, which marched in formation. It’s been hit-or-miss in recent years, but organizers say they want to bring it back next year.
