Spurs Get Devastating Injury Update on Wemby Amid 9-4 Start

The San Antonio Spurs are primed to snap their six-year playoff drought after getting off to a 9-4 start in the 2025-26 season. Unfortunately, their chances of remaining competitive in the ruthless Western Conference have taken a significant blow, as news broke on Monday that franchise star Victor Wembanyama, AKA Wemby, will be sidelined for the foreseeable future due to a calf strain.

The Spurs initially listed Wemby as questionable in the lead-up to Sunday’s 123-110 win over the Sacramento Kings. That was until the French phenom complained about “something he felt” in his left calf, leading the Spurs to put him in bubble wrap.

Spurs Won’t Rush Wemby Back

After the game, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson revealed that the team won’t take any chances with calf strains, citing the unfortunate Achilles-sized outcome that the likes of Kevin Durant and Tyrese Haliburton endured by playing through the same injury.

“Obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Johnson said, via ESPN’s Michael C. Wright.

“So, [we’ve] just got to get some more information. Don’t want to push it there.”

It’s not clear what “information” the Spurs received on Wemby’s calf strain on Monday, as they did not specify its severity. However, ESPN’s Shams Charania noted that he will be sidelined “for a few weeks” at a minimum, raising concerns of a more severe issue.

“Again, [with] calf tightness, there are certain things that you don’t want it to be a gateway thing or anything like that,” coach Johnson said on Sunday night.

“So, you just need to be clear on what’s going on out of precaution here.”

Wemby ‘In Good Spirts’

It’s worth noting that Victor Wembanyama was said to be “in good spirits” in the locker room after Sunday’s game, and not in a walking boot.

“Saw Victor Wembanyama in the locker room last night and he had a small sleeve on that injured calf. Didn’t look like he was in any discomfort and was in good spirits. But as y’all know, the Spurs will always err on the side of caution – especially with a calf strain,” reported ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, after news broke of Wemby’s injury.

Wright added that the Spurs are being extra cautious with Wemby, adding credence to Mitch Johnson’s postgame comments from Sunday night.

“League source says Spurs will re-evaluate Victor Wembanyama in 2-3 weeks. He’ll be out at least 2 weeks. Spurs are being especially cautious given all the calf injuries we’ve seen lately turn into something worse. For what it’s worth, I’m told Vic feels fine.”

The one positive for the Spurs is that rookie Dylan Harper, who has been sidelined since November 4, also with a calf strain, is on the verge of returning soon.
