Sidney Crosby Shares New Details on His Iconic 2010 Golden Goal

Sidney Crosby recently reflected on one of the most unforgettable moments in Canada’s hockey history. He shared new insight on his game winning goal in the 2010 Olympic gold medal game. The goal has been refereed to as the ‘Golden Goal.’

Crosby scored that goal against the United States on home ice to seal the gold medal. Canada felt pressure after their disappointing exit at the 2006 Olympics, so the win carried huge weight. ‘Sid the Kid’ was only in his 5th NHL season during the tournament, so it was definitely a moment that shaped his young career.

Now, an established veteran, Crosby spoke about gaining perspective from that game. The pressure, atmosphere, and momentum swings, shaped how he has dealt with similar in-game situations.

During an interview with CBC Sports‘ Ariel Helwani, Crosby explained how he felt when the Americans forced overtime.

“So much comes to mind,” Crosby said. “Probably just the devastation being 30 seconds away from winning it and having [the United States] tie it up. That feeling will stick with me.”

He then described how the team regrouped during the intermission before overtime. Crosby said the players recognized the shock but quickly built confidence again.

“To go from that feeling of being devastated to just the intensity but also the drive of everyone in there to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to find a way to get this done,’” Crosby said. “That confidence and everyone believing in that, that was pretty clear heading into out for overtime. And I think even as a young guy, I felt that and that was really cool to be a part of and then to go out there and get it done.”

Sidney Crosby Reveals Canadian Player Who Provided a Spark

Sidney Crosby also identified one Canadian player who provided a crucial spark before overtime began. He highlighted the value of a strong veteran presence during tense moments.

Canada’s 2010 Olympic roster featured Stanley Cup winners and elite scorers, who kept the team poised.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani, Crosby mentioned captain Scott Niedermayer. He said Niedermayer motivated the group and restored the mindset they needed.

“It was probably a few minutes into the intermission and then it was like there was a switch. I remember [Niedermayer] saying a few words,” Crosby recalled. “[Niedermayer] had a huge impact on our group the entire time.”

He continued:

“In that moment I remember just how calm he was and poised. And for something that could be so rattling.” Crosby said. “To have him come in so composed after that, that belief I think was felt throughout the room and it carried on to overtime.”

Crosby Opens Up About Significance of His Golden Goal

Crosby also discussed the legacy of his overtime goal to win the 2010 Olympic gold medal with Canada. He already held superstar status in the NHL, but the goal elevated him into rarer company. It gave Canada a home-ice Olympic gold medal and created and iconic national moment.

Crosby holds three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins and two Olympic gold medalist with Canada. Despite that success, his golden goal remains among his most significant career achievements.

“It’s up there. I would say definitely in my hockey career,” Crosby told CBC Sports. “I’ve been fortunate to be part of some really cool moments, but yeah, that’s right up there.”
