Del Mar’s Friday racing rained out; Monday card added

With rain expected to return, Del Mar has canceled thoroughbred racing Friday and has added a card Monday, the San Diego County track announced Wednesday morning.

Del Mar plans to have racing Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday will have no races on the turf course.

Del Mar and Los Alamitos both canceled racing Saturday, early in a period of sometimes heavy rain in Southern California. When Del Mar resumed Sunday, its main track was still damp and was listed as “good” for the races 1-4 before being upgraded to “fast” for races 5-9. Los Al’s track was termed “fast” for all races Sunday night.

The rainout last week was Del Mar’s first since Aug. 20, 2023, and Southern California’s first for a thoroughbred program since Santa Anita called off racing March 30 and 31, 2024.

Tracks used to routinely run in the mud, but cancellations and postponements are common since fatal injuries to horses spiked at Santa Anita in early 2019 during a winter of unusually persistent rain.

The Del Mar fall season continues through Nov. 30.
