Jerry Jeudy didn’t hide his frustration on Wednesday, offering curt, clipped answers during his press conference after the Cleveland Browns announced Shedeur Sanders would start on Sunday.
Jeudy has been more involved the last few weeks, but has been having an abysmal season after being a Pro Bowler a year ago. Jeudy has caught just 31 passes for 356 yards and one touchdown this season.
Sanders will become the Browns’ third starting quarterback this season. Despite appearing in just 27 games for Cleveland, Jeudy has already caught passes from six different quarterbacks.
Browns WR Jerry Jeudy Appears Fed Up
Jeudy responded with clipped answers regarding the move from Dillon Gabriel to Sanders, a change forced by Gabriel’s concussion. Asked how crucial this week’s practices will be for syncing up with Sanders, he didn’t give much more.
“It’s going to be very important,” Jeudy said.
So what has he seen from Sanders in terms of growth?
“He’s consistently growing,” Jeudy said.
Is there a way to fast-forward the process of building chemistry with a quarterback?
“You just need reps,” Jeudy said.
As the team’s top wideout, Jeudy is usually forthcoming during interviews. But multiple Cleveland reporters noted a shift in his tone during his latest media session — an awkward moment of silence at a time when the Browns had just announced Sanders as the new starter.
“I definitely thought that was a weird interview. It was unlike Jerry Jeudy who is typically a guy who talks good or bad, win or lose,” Ashley Bastock of cleveland.com said on 92.3 The Fan. “Now he’s brought upon himself all this speculation.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Feels Prepared for First Start
Sanders made his first NFL appearance last week after Gabriel exited at halftime with a concussion. He completed just four passes for 47 yards and threw an interception in the loss. Sanders took responsibility for the rough outing but noted that he lacked chemistry with Cleveland’s top receivers, pointing out that he hasn’t received any first-team reps since joining the team.
“I don’t think I played good. I don’t think I played good at all. I think it’s a lot of things,” Sanders said after the 23-16 loss. “We need to look at, during the week and go and just get comfortable, even throwing routes with Jerry and throwing routes with all those guys. So I think that was my first ball to him all year. But other than that, I just think overall we just got to go next week and understand so then we have a week to prepare stuff I like to do.”
Sanders will get all the reps he can handle this week with the starting offense and feels confident that his first start will come with a different result.
“I know our fans have a lot of expectations and hope, and I would be doing a disservice to myself and disservice to the organization if I didn’t feel like I am the guy,” Sanders said. “I’m doing everything I need to prepare to be the best version of myself as possible. With the circumstances, everything got me sped up, and that’s great – I like pressure in life. I’m just excited for everything. So, I feel like I’m the guy, I know I’m the guy, but you just have to be able to see.”
